HI,

We all know about the AV-101 Astroplane and why it was designed and indeed how well it works but I cant find any discussion anywhere on the NET for the Avanti AV-100 Astro.

It appears the copyright of 1978 in the AV-100 handbook is same as my AV-101 handbook so I guess they were still selling the AV-100 at the same time the AV-101 was being sold? When did the AV-100 come on the market? Prior to AV-101?

Was it sold as a CB antenna or as a 10M HAM antenna as the top radiator is adjustable and didn't have to confirm to the height restrictions of CB at the time?

Id love to know how having the full 1/4 element effects the radiation pattern?

Anyone else out there have this antenna still?

Here in the UK. I know of know-one ever using this antenna past or present. Some of you guys in the US must of had one at some stage?

Would love to know more...

Hello All: It looks like the AV-100 does not have the Top Hat as the AV-101 has. Adding the Top Hat cross type parts on top of the antennas vertical element would allow for a shorter antenna, and maybe better or easier tuning.

I noticed that the AV-100 and the AV-101 assembly instructions are both copywrite in 1978, possibility indicated that the AV-100 was quickly replaced with the upgraded AV-101.

Jay in the Great Mojave Desert.... Happy Memorial Day to everyone, a day to remember those who gave their all for this country.

Dont know the specifics but I have one of those still sealed in the original box.
Lucky you. Have a look in the handbook and see what it says about tuning the antenna and what frequency the antenna covers. It may of been marketed as a HAM 10M antenna.

The AV-100 didn't replace the AV-101 as the patent for the AV-101 was applied for in 1968 and published 1971. So the AV-100 must of come later maybe around the time when inventors invented the AV-150 Astro Beam??

My "guess" and someone correct me if I wrong this was marketed as a 10M HAM antenna as the 1/4 wave top section it didn't have to comply with the CB antenna height restrictions of that time.

In theory it should perform better with the more efficient 1/4 wave replacing the 1/8 wave.

Pics attached of the inventors Herb Blaise and Lou Martino. Note the sketches on the board for the Astro Beam.

Anyone have the contents of this mag review?

Hey 141. Welcome to the forum.

I was amazed when I read your post above. I also have wondered why the Astro Beam had such a short top radiator section. I can't tell you exactly why, but I think the Dual 59-U Matching Harness for the A/B had something to do with this idea. Maybe we can discuss this question later.

I did some modeling of my Old Top One A/P with a full 1/4w radiator, and I posted it here on the forum I'm sure. I also modified my real Top One as noted, and did some comparison work using both designs on the same setup in my back yard. I recorded my signal reports and both showed, most of the time, they were equal in performance.

The Old Top One was a very similar antenna to what Avanti produced and was sold in the US for years after Avanti when out.

A forum search might help one locate this old thread. I will have to check my Eznec files and post some of those old reports that I used back then. I may even have a model of the Astro Beam.

Below is a PDF file of the article from the old CB Magazine where you posted for us the front page in a PDF file.

You did some Good Work to dig this information our of the past, and I appreciate that.

I look forward to talking with you more.

I have an original Avanti AstroPlane I bought a few yrs back sealed in its original box and like it better than my IMAX. As soon as I get the time I will put it back up.

Back in the 80s there where alot of them around town. Now most of them are gone.

Hello 431. I have a high regard for my Old Top One made years ago and sold by Coppers Electronics for years. It is similar to the Avanti version.

If you put the A/P back up, then I recommend you get new coax or at least check the old coax used on the Imax. The A99 and the Imax both have the feed point at the very bottom of these wire antennas and if water gets into the antenna...it can go right into the coax and over time can damage the shield.

Just something to consider.

Good luck and be careful with your install.
