Recapping older radios

I picked up a used radio off eBay. It worked pretty well on AM, on ssb it was off frequency. I was looking to get it recapped & aligned, among other things. I ended up sending it to LooseCannon to get the work done.
I decided that the recapping would be preventative maintenance. It seemed to be the prudent thing as that way I would only have to send it out once. I'm very happy with the work done. Just mho I'm happy to send a used radio out to get recapped. This way I have peace of mind about the radio lasting for years.

Well, I guess it goes to show that there is almost never a "right" answer to these type of questions. I will say that "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is not the right answer though. In some cases, such as my GE Superbase, it worked but I read that there are some issues with leaky caps that mess up the circuit board. I did a recap and guess what. It had some leaky caps that were eating away at the traces. Even though they were leaking they still worked. It was a matter of time that the traces would have been damaged to the point that they would no longer work and the repair would have been much greater. Not all radios have this issue though so that is not meant to be a "warning" but just another side of the discussion.
