I'm not educated on transverters. Are they universal? I'm interested in using one with my Ts-590sg. Is this possible? If so, which is a good one?

Elecraft has sold a line of transverters for different bands for many years.

You'll see people selling these fairly often.

Unless you are interested in weak signal / SSB on 2 meters it would be more cost effective for FM to get a 2 meter mobile.

I dabble with 2 meter CW/SSB. I have an 706, 991A and an 857D. My Kenwood is only rig in my shack. Figured it'd be worth a try to use it. I'm in process of installing a new tower for 10 meter quad a a 2 meter yagi underneath it.

The Elecraft transverters offer some flexibility. With the change of an internal jumper you can select either split input / ouput through BNC connectors or the single coaxial style. Also selectable the input power level.

I've used a couple of the Elecraft transverters but honestly didn't have antennas high enough to take full advantage. But I loved the spectrum display when used with an old Flex radio. I did use a brick amp with the transverter.

Many of the newer rigs like the 991 will have higher output power then the transverters which often are 10 to 25 watts.

I bought a dedicated 2 Meter Kenwood TR751 and a Arrow 4el. Havent bothered with the yagi, just use a mobile dual bender antenna. Sometimes these all mode 2m radios pop up cheap.

My last 2 meter setup consisted of a ICOM 706 and Cushcraft 13b2 flatside about 30 feet. Made tons of CW contacts. I was surprised how well it worked.I have an 857 in the mobile. I've yelled and monitored, but nothing yet.
I want to try a 2 meter quad this time. It'll be up about 60 feet if everything goes well. I have tower, coax and thrust bearing. I think an AR44 will turn both quads. Just need to get tower up and buy rotor. Also need a pesky Oak tree trimmed away.

I've had good luck with homebrews and cushcraft on 2m ssb.. Currently run one 13b2 around 60 ft at the boom.. horizontal. Works well for what it is. We plan to move in a few months (getting out of IL like everybody else) and I will have much more room for a tower(s). I really want to try out a big m2 model and put it up around 80-100 ft.. we will see how things go in the next couple years..
