Ok, we have some great threads about different antennas here, so I want to throw something different out here to talk about.
Anyone ever run one of these?

I thought this wasn't the case until I modeled an antenna similar to this one. This similar antenna model mounted 10 feet high has close to 5 dBi gain to the front and back, horizontally polarized, and about 2.3 dBi vertically polarized gain the the sides. Its the first time I've seen a (mostly) horizontally mounted antenna with any real vertically polarized gain...

Again, I would like to point out the words "similar to" above, although it is close enough that this antenna likely performs very similarly.

It is a very interesting mobile antenna design.
It is great that you had modeled it DB.
I search around to find actual dimensions on it but there is not much out there.
I would love to find a close up picture of the matching device.

Here is my model of this Jo Gunn Super Sinner RV antenna. The two patterns show the gain for horizontal and vertical (*) as compared. I basically used the dimensions that Jeff provided in the link he added and I center fed the antenna. My model using a simulated gamma match was problematic. The simulated top of a large flat to mobile noted a few inches above the ground was also problematic when I raised it up within inches of the antenna.


This model is over Average Earth and is 10' feet above ground. I see horizontal gain of 4.67 dBi at 52* degrees, which is not bad for an antenna at 10' feet high with a mast attached. However, I see very little vertical gain.

The horizontal Azimuth Plot (not posted) shows 0.95 dBi gain in both the front and back to the horizon, while the Vertical Azimuth Plot shows a maximum gain of -28.23 dBi to the sides.

I placed the feed point on the bottom elements and set the two elements closer together. The match and gain improved, but there is still very little vertical RF to be noted in this configuration with 4 x 1/4 wave ground plan radials added...instead of sitting inches above the top of a large mobile body.

Again, Jo Gunn obviously has a secret in this design. Sorry Jeff, I don't have a clue how to get vertical RF out of this one, or how they deal with this setup being placed within inches of the top of some vehicle.

I have little understanding of modeling compared to your experience.
My thoughts also questioned how there could be any vertical radiation from this antenna mounted horizontal and being so close to the top of the surface.
It is interesting.
And we all know that advertising in the CB world can be a little magical.
I wanted to see if any members here had actually used this antenna.
Wonder what Joe Gunn would tell me if I call them?
For that matter I wonder if it is still in production?

I was wondering when someone was going to notice that - too.
Seems too close to the sheet metal to be effective at all . . . just saying . . .
