When did they start putting cooling fans in this radio? I can hear it running but don't see it in any pics of the inside. And why do some have that clear plastic on the covers and some don't? Just picked this one up and so far like it.

not sure but I just got one too. I was hoping it had fans inside. I haven't hooked it up yet. clear plastic? are you referring to that funny black looking tape on the tin cover? I kinda wondered about that. Does it run hot?

There’s a single fan located under the amp board. You’d have to pop that cover off the bottom of the heatsink to see it, the one that says Galaxy on it.

There’s always been a fan or fans in that heatsink chassis, they’re small. They’re about 40mmx40mmx10mm, 12v 0.14A

Part number should be DF124010SM, Top Motor by Dynaeon Industrial Co, China. You can fit a slightly larger fan in there that’ll move slightly more CFM but you have to screw it down, you’ll lose the clips ability to hold the fan down.

Funny, it needs something like that. If you start all the magical tuning and crap that thing gets hot and that single fan will struggle. I know it will in the Connex 4600 Turbo, it too has a single fan.

They've always had fans. Have to for the high-power output and the small heat sink. Like Pork Chop said, they are under the amp board. Pray to God the fan never fails. Major fucking surgery to take amp board apart to get to the fan. Terrible design location.

What I've noticed with mine is the fan runs almost all the time(as a mobile)even if I'm not taliking on it. When I key the mic the fan shuts off until I unkey. This normal??

I don’t think that’s normal but I’ve honestly never really paid it a lot of attention. Maybe they’re not stopping but just dying down due to current draw??

The temperature sensor that activates the fan nearly always goes bad in a few years.

If it makes the fan run all the time, you'll wear out the fan's sleeve bearings. If you're lucky it will get loud and warn you before it seizes up and the radio blows up from overheating.

And if the failed temp sensor prevents the fan from running at all, this just breaks the radio faster.

We adopted a fix that patches the temp-sensor circuit to the built-in amplifier's keying relay. When the mike is keyed, the fan runs, and shuts off when receiving.

More reliable than trying to make the temp sensor work like it should.

Well my fan quit and I said fuck it because it's way too much trouble to get to. I strapped on a 5 inch muffin fan to the bottom and power separately with a switch and turn on when it needs it. Also added a 2 watt, 200 ohm pot in line to control the fan speed. Works fine for me and I don't mind the looks although I know some people wouldn't want to do that.

Do you have a website for information on sending it in for repair?
