My rf power is fluctuating from 1/2 to 12 watts . I set the dead key on 2 1/2 watts to drive my amp. Could this be a bad final? Or a bad capacitor? I have not opened the radio yet. I suspect it could be a capacitor near the voltage regulator. Cb tricks symptoms and cure database has been down for weeks . (EPT360014B)

Need more info..... Does radio do this with the Mic gain turned all the way down or off? Does your watt meter needle bounce from 1/2 to 12 watts without speaking into the mic? What mode does this happen in?

In AM, watt meter needle should go up to a fixed number like 5-10 watts, (this is called dead key), and not bounce around unless you talk or whistle into mic. In LSB or USB, the watt meter needle should NOT move at all until you speak into the mic.

The front-panel controls are prone to getting erratic with age. The radio is old enough that a shot of proper control cleaner to the Power control might be all it needs. DeOxit is a good choice.

The trimpot VR13 that sets max carrier on the main circuit board is just as suspect for getting "scratchy" and erratic like a noisy volume control.

And there's another trimpot for minimum carrier, same deal. It's on the circuit board behind the front-panel flip switches. Probably marked VR803.

Sorry for the delay. I put it on the shelf Just decided to look at it again. Cleaning the pots with deoxit and bingo. Works like new.
