Yaesu FT-450D Transceiver

For the price, this is the best HF transceiver you can get.
The DSP works great, it has just about all the features of the more expensive models and best of all, you can find them for under $100.00 new. The auto tuner works great within it's limits.
They put out an honest 100 watts of power.
They are not the best contesting transceiver, but for the price, they do everything well.
For a first ham rig, they are hard to beat. Yes, there are better rigs out there, but you will pay far more for them.
The Yaesu is far better than the Alinco and lowest priced Icoms.

When you are ready to spend 4K plus on a high end transceiver, the size of the 450 makes them perfect for go kits, a back up or to put in your vehicle.
For under $900. you get one heck of a lot of radio. People never guess I'm talking on a low priced transceiver and I've busted more than a few big pile ups using just 100 watts and a vertical antenna.

If your new, money is tight or you just want a great compact transceiver, you cannot go wrong with the Yaesu 450, it's one heck of a great unit for the low price. The DSP filtering does a great job of getting rid of QRM. There is better filtering in the high priced units, but none better in the lower priced receivers and the Alinco does not even have DSP.
Buy one and don't look back, great audio, I get fantastic reports all the time and when you are ready to upgrade, if you even decide to, it's a great back up or fine for taking on trips. I doubt I'll upgrade for a long time. I'm not into DX awards (though I really enjoy a good DX contact and can make them with this radio) and this unit does everything I need, it even had duel VFO's for split freq. Money would be far better spent on a great antenna system before ever considering buying a more expensive radio.
You can have the best radio in the world and it will get out like poop on a poor antenna. Antennas are the place to put your money if your just starting out, great antennas will get you many more contacts than a
10K radio.
The Yaesu 450 and good antenna(s) will get the job done. If you have way more money than I do, go ahead and buy your 10K radio and towers with yagi's with a 1500 watt amp and you will have one of the best stations anywhere, but if your like most of us, a Yaesu 450 and money spent on great antennas will get you more contacts than you will ever think possible. Being a good operator is a huge help also.

And the price on a lightly-used Ft450 is reasonable now it’s been out a while.

Hmm, a New Design Super Whack-Pack Stryker 955 for $900 drop-shipped from the the gate guards leaky motorhome at the back entrance of Epstein’s New Mexican Zorro Ranch for $900?

Or a used ft450 for about $5-600?

Decisions, decisions . . . .

.
