My worse investment when I started was worth 200 bucks and didn't know what I was doing at the time, was a ge CB radio and an antron I got taken for many years go but I learned how to deal made me stronger.
Sending my MR X chromed Galaxy 98V to get the SUPER WHACK PACK mods by the gate guard at Zorro Ranch in New Mexico.
$1,700 down the turlet.

Uh. First, how’d ya get Mr X chrome job. Secondly, is that gate guard who I think it is?
And third, that $1700, that total between the two or you meaning just the guard?
I bought a Cobra 139XLR at a fest years ago, the plan was to convert to 10 meters. Got it home, opened it and there was a huge hole in the middle of the board. Carried that rig to hamfests for a couple of years in case I ran into the seller.
I’m being as inventive as I think is appropriate. None of it true.
$900 HAS been paid to the gate guard (yeah, him) for a 955.
I just made a guess about X price for above. Fabuloso!
$1,700 is chicken scratch. I’ve EASILY spent more the last two years.
And (slight exaggeration) only my tool box, supply bags and Undertaker-approved Antenna Museum Rack are anything to show for it, ha!

Started year by getting an ft450D. Barely used. But heftiest sum ever for a radio for me.
(You want a fast car you don’t start with the engine. You do, and it sits till the rest is ready. Shoulda got the optional dust cover. Embroidered).
I haven’t even plugged it in.
So, to the topic question: No, there are no bad investments with amateur radio. Only experiential learning.
