The new Mckinley

drop that guy a pm or ask him in comments I think I got that video yesterday. I don't know. I just thought sharing it with you was beneficial. if you figure it out let us know as I would like a McKinley like that

A very attractive radio. Either version.

Ballpark numbers:

1). EU Model $301.00
$343/shipped
from Knights (Great Britain)

2). Regular McK is $179.00
$200/shipped
from Bells (Florida)

(Details apply as to exact cost)

Is it fair to consider the UNIDEN 980 or the PRESIDENT McKinley as default choices for new equipment to cover AM/SSB?

What “more” does one get moving up in price? (Leave wattage out). IOW, are higher-priced Mobile transceivers that much better?

Especially if I am using an adjustable outboard DSP filter

They are good for the regular 40 channels, but what if you wanted upper and lower channels? Does the McKinley EU have uppers and lowers?

Guys! I have to get to bed here, I wake up at midnight to get my truck going down the road, but I am going to do an in-depth video review of the new McKinley's soon. I want to have the time to do a nice detailed review. These just might be the best modern mobile CB radios ever designed. I can't say enough about them. They have every feature you can put on a radio, including a one-of-a-kind SWR meter that, in short, let's you do your test from outside your shack or vehicle, and has an automatic squelch that actually works! It also has variable RF output, and every other feature you could possibly want. The radio comes with a 25 Watt final, can be easily turned up to 4 to 18 Watt variable RF output, and the modulation can easily be turned up to ridiculous levels. People ask me what power mike I'm using when I'm using the stock mike. This radio blows a 959 out of the water in every way! Cheers. Dean, from Denver, Colorado.

The US McKinley doesn’t have a VFO (pretty sure that’s true for the EU version as well). It also doesn’t appear to have a 5 kHz shift feature, which the Grant II does have.

With that, I don’t think the McKinley EU would have a lot of use on amateur bands, or even on the frequencies beyond 40 channel CB. You can use it, but only in 10 kHz steps. That can get frustrating at times.

There is a clarifier mod shown on Mike’s Radio Repair YT channel, but it does involve very tiny surface mount components. Perhaps the modified clarifier can cover 5+ kHz on transmit ? If so, then it becomes more useful, but you are putting more work into making the radio meet your needs, when there are radios our there that do all this for less money (and often, with more TX output power).

The McKinley SWR adjustment feature is interesting, but when I compared the results to my antenna analyzer, I found the McK indicated SWR readings different from my analyzer, and went with my analyzer. It is handy however for getting you in the ballpark, without a lot of back and forth to take a measurement. And at 4 watts/12 watts output, not a big deal.

I would buy an EU version if it were closer to $200 US, but at nearly $350 US, it doesn’t give me anything my President Lincoln II+ doesn’t have, and the Lincoln is $100+ less. Also doesn’t offer me anything over my Grant II. And since my U.S. McKinley was given to me for free by an old friend who preferred his Realistic CB over the McK, I am quite happy with the radio as it is. It sits in my old ‘93 Blazer K1500. But I resisted buying a McKinley since they were introduced, because the initial price was $199, and now they are around $179. A Uniden 980SSB is at least $50 less and not much different from the McKinley. A Lincoln II or AT-6666 are around $250.

I think some of the newer President radios are likely loaded with different firmware for the US and EU markets, so even if there was a modification for the EU model, it likely wouldn’t work on the US model. I found the “hidden menu” on the President Bill FCC radio, but I think there is another step needed to allow me to change the values of the AMC and TX power (AL and PL). Even so, I don’t believe there are any additional channels in the US firmware version. This is likely the case with the US McKinley. And also, I really don’t operate outside of the 40 US channels anymore, so I would only be interested in using the McK EU on the amateur bands, and again, it lacks some needed features that a Lincoln II or AT-6666 have, for much less coin.

YetiComNZ also has the McKinley EU listed for sale. When I ordered from them 2 years ago, it cost about $60 in shipping to get my order to the US east coast. That would put the McKinley EU about $345 shipped from NZ...assuming shipping is about the same.
