Well, I finished one of 6 microphone restores today! Why do people pay you over $100 to do this I do like these mics but I would not personally pay that much but that is what they are willing to pay!! It is time-consuming and can be tedious. The +2 below is waiting on the new gain label and then it's done.



Had to construct a new battery box for this one as the old one was badly deteriorated.



Well, I have already started on the next one as it is from the same customer that sent me a Tram D300 it was quite a mess nearly nothing worked on it so a restore was in order! over $500 he will have invested in the radio and 2 mics what a different world it is from when I started in the late '60s.

Re-cap and re-meter a Royce 1-621 base 40 channel. Was given to me from a family member that cleaned out an old department store in my town. Wood case and chassis is in good shape. No rust. DK 4.5 watts and swing a huge 6!

Only one problem.... the meter pegs right when keyed. I see no VR for adjustment. Does any one have the schemo for this unit so I would not have to purchase a service manual? Greatly appreciated!

And for the record... the original meter did the same thing. I only replaced it cuz the original meter, someone glued in a replacement wheat lamp and the needle was hitting the glue gobs. Lucky it takes a Cobra 148 style meter and I have some in stock. Just swapped out the scale insert and painted the white needle with red Sharpie! LOL

after 2 sets of the original battery holders going thru my mfj 259 that i bought in 1995 i changed the holders to a set of harder plastic than original that i had for a project that didnt go,,, i had bought the holders back when the shack was a thing,,, i had one of the rechargable battery go bad and it was an easy fix,, so it is up and running fine business now,,,

C B tricks has the wiring and outher things you are looking for on their site . I have the same 1 621 . and the 640 AM SSB Bought New at rat shak. Re-cap it years age Works Good

Made a little more progress on that Pace 8193 I talked about earlier in the thread.

Once the T/R relay was replaced and I had signal on the S-meter I started looking for where it disappeared again. Found the demodulated 1K audio on a wire leading to the volume control, so I know the IF chain is good enough. Traced it all the way to the main audio amplifier, or in this case audio trap. Tone goes in, it doesn't come out.

Ordered new amp chip and waited, and waited. It finally shows up and then a few days later I have time to swap it out.

Still no audio. Check the audio amp, little signal in and big signal out. So that's fixed. Accidentally tapped the CB/PA switch and heard a chirp. Played with it some more and for one glorious moment I had tone coming out of the speaker.

So now I've got to either figure out how to clean that switch, or try to find a replacement. I don't know if this exact model is still made, but it looks like there's some pretty close matches out there.

Well, I seem to have a love of TRC-458's, so I picked up a 2nd one. This one was a mess. Lightning grabbed this one and it was B.L.A.C.K. underneath. Someone had done some repair work on it before me, and surprisingly, the radio actually functioned when I got it.

Items that were replaced before I got it:
Power transformer
ALL transistors in the power supply circuit, including the pass regulator
Predriver transistor
Driver transistor
Final transistor
Audio IC
Voltage regulator for the channel display
Relay and socket
Some electrolytic capacitors

I was finding remnants of capacitor "fuzz" all over the inside of the radio, from when caps exploded. Also, the original relay and socket had been replaced. and were super-glued to the side of the chassis over by the final.

This pic was after I had scrubbed on the underside of the chassis for close to 2 hours.


Did a full recap, replaced the relay and socket with OEM parts, and did some tuning and she performs just as well as my other one, with slightly more PEP output. My other radio does 17W PEP output, this one does 20W PEP.

Props to whoever took the time to go thru this radio before I did... most people would have just thrown it in a junk bin for parts with as much damage as it took from the lightning hit.

Hi-Tech:
Put a blue bulb in an old faded-display skunktracker:



Brought a discarded 210 XLT back to life:

Built an "I can short it out all by myself" head for my $5 750w Fatality PSU:


Put some extree channels in a 30 year old clone of a Galaxy clone of a Unidyne:


Put some purtee lights in a really cool leenyer:

and some power for dat leenyer:

Bought a NO TX FT-1000D on the cheap from CL, fixed it and sold it.
Then the new owner called and said it took a lightning strike and the tx was gone again. I ran and hid in a hole.

Converted every Goodwill-sourced lantern and flashlight I could find to LED:

My dad died Jan 2017, and cleaning out some of his stuff I found this box he has stuffed full of pennies: He had bought me the item contained inside the box in the late 70's.
