I repair swimming pools and replace equipment that has large 24v transformers could one be used to make a power supply. They are put in pile at shop now. And probably get sold for scrap. Unless I find a use for them my boss would probably give then to me. I picked up a big one weighed twenty pounds some have no label. But their should be a way to figure that out. I hate for good stuff to go to waste. I see treasure in another's junk

Most draw 5 Amps when working

Less than one amp they are for salt systems I thought with a filter the transformer could run a twelve volt radio, like a cb

Nothing tricky about it. If left connected the primary will draw current. Didn't I see an advertisement telling everyone to unplug their wall warts when not in use? :D

I use my clamp meter on them if the salt cell is good it pulls five amps if salt level in pool is high it pulls more if not corrected the chlorine generator burns out and pulls nothing so less than an amp I dont pay attention to that number but I will next time if the transformer pulls zero it's bad.
Maybe I need to send him my clamp meter. Would that help?

I need positive comments. Not stuff from punks trying to belittle me so sun bulls what's your problem
You can use a “buck converter” to drop that voltage down, but they’re terribly inefficient. Depending on the converters ratings you may end up having enough amperage to power a stock CB, but not much else. They’re also notorious for not having a very clean output. The second alternative and far better IMO is to see how difficult it would be to remove some turns off the secondary. I’d remove one turn at a time until the voltage dropped around 18 volts. Once achieved, you can apply that lower voltage to any one of the numerous analog power supply circuit designs.

Sorry, I intended to pass along this info in the first place until I got side tracked with some other comments that were being made. I’ll try to remind myself in the future to stay focused on the primary topic. If anyone wants to chastise my part in this discussion, that’s fine too. My main objective is to be continually supportive to the hobby and to answer questions to the best of my ability. Funny, I haven't been called a "punk" since I was a teenager, wish I was that young again... Enough said, I’ll refrain from making further comments in this regard.

Sorry., i run my mouth without thinking. I do apologize and I mean that.I think I have been working in an electronic/pool and spa control world. He hate having to buy a new one so I make the old stuff work others gave up on
