Sirio Turbo 5000 mobile antenna

If want a longer antenna, I do have a 102" as whip on the garage. I like to try different antennas. And the Sirio gets Good reviews.

I've collected a variety of mobile antennas myself. It looks like the "Texas" won't arrive until after this weekend. I've been mucking around in the garage for a couple days and pulled a Sirio 4000 PL from my antenna cache. The whip on it is actually 4" longer than the one on the 5000, which is my daily user. 4" won't make a difference. I was just a little surprised that it was longer. :cautious:

Couldn’t help myself and had to order a Texas this morning.

It’ll be too long for me to ride around with (my Wilson 5000 whacks everything), so I’m going to try a pl-3/8 adaptor for running it static when DXing. At a minimum, I want to try a first hand comparison with the Wilson and a 10k.

Most municipalities I’m familiar with require trees, etc, trimmed for 15’ clearance. Tractor-trailers need 13’6”.

There are places I go where an antenna to that height “may” encounter something, but staying closer to road center prevents it.

How high is your roof? On my pickup it’d take a helluva antenna to get past 14’.

I’d guess over 6’6”, probably closer to 7’. I’m 5’8”, and here’s where my head meets the truck:

I have had limbs hit the a-pillars on the truck on public roads at least a few times..not always well maintained here. The Wilson hits stuff constantly, but I avoid what I can.

EDIT: I measured it...it was at the lower end of my estimate at 6’6.5”

Mines a 2WD diesel. I’m 6’2” and head is well above roof. 5’6” maybe across centerpoint.

Maybe an adjustable ball mount that can be kept “loose” enough to fall back. Or similar.

The Texas is a seven foot antenna. (83.46).

I won’t use it riding around at all. I Dx from public areas, boat ramps, parks, and etc. I need an antenna that doesn’t draw a lot of attention (the Wilson is actually perfect for that).

Years ago I used to mount and A99 to the trailer hitch of my car. Worked great. Problem was, being so conspicuous, every passerby, park ranger and cop had too many questions for me and I never ended up spending much time on the radio!

Received the Sirio yesterday. USPS notified me that it was delivered and left on the front porch. Opened the door, no package.WTF?? Then it hit me, our mailman has to be dislexic, he sometimes delivers my packages down the street at the corner house. Walked down the street, sure enough. There was on the porch. Went up to retrieve my package and this is what I found:

The box was split in half. With further inspection, the seller used 3 boxes folded over to accommodate the long antenna and wrapped the coil in a padded envelope. No dance to the contents, but I would think the seller could have taken more care in his packaging. Anywho, installed the antenna this morning. SWR is not great, but it was 30° this morning, so when\if it warms up I'll try to do some more tuning. I'll get a pic up when I get some time.

Time for a GoldenRod 45

Only 5’ tall.

Add a couple of NMO mount Larsens and a Unity gain on the roof to go with it.

A BC-12 pair stacked and lit on the front seat. 3-4 mikes hanging from mirror. 2/0 cables poking out from underhood.

A pair of sunglasses with a mirrored lense and an orange lense

Go full propeller-head, or go home.

Wilson mag mount.

Could be the spot I have the mag mount. The Wilson tuned almost perfect 8" from the third brake light. This one might need to be positioned more towards the center of the cab. Dunno. Not saying the SWR is terrible, just not as low as I'd like. But it's acceptable.

Well, the antenna arrived a few minutes ago (way earlier than predicted). I forgot about the whip being 2 pcs (o_O) so when I saw the short package the first thought I had was that they shipped the wrong item... ;)

I have it centered (but more left-center) on the roof of my SUV. Maybe I have more roof space.
