Trying to figure this thing out and keep it from poofing.

Supposedly, my rigs DRV port remembers my power settings when I set the IF of 28.000. I have read where one 590 owner says it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't. Anything more than 10-15 watts input, poofs the transverter. The transverter has PTT line, HF bypass of 100 watts and RF sense, but the designer recommends PTT.

I want the 2 meter frequency to read out on my 590. Not sure, can I set my offset to read that high? I'm playing around with my rigs menu settings and trying to confirm that when it's in DRV mode, it actually rolls power back to 5 watts. I was hoping this unit operated easier. I discovered, then later discovered in the manual, that the tuner is disabled in DRV mode. This isn't an issue while operating the transverter, but just another bothersome menu adjustment when I switch back to HF. The transverter instructions are difficult to understand. Mostly from Ukraine to English translation.

If I can't adjust my offset like I want to, then is my math correct? I'm supposed to have 144-148, since my radio is expanded to 32 Mhz.

28.200 = 144.200
29.000 = 145.200
30.000 = etc etc etc....?

Definitely need a checklist before operating to ensure power on each mode is turned down to 5 watts.

I can see me smoking this thing.

Perhaps you made a typo but 29.000 would be 145.000. 30.000 would be 146.000 and 30.520 would be 146.520.

The more I think about it, I don't want to tie up my main rig and go thru all the menu and power steps. Probably just pick up an old RCI-2950 and install a keying relay to bypass the transverters RF sense. Make it my dedicated 2 meter rig. I have an old 2 meter amp to run behind it. Pretty sure I'll forget and run to much powa with my 590 and poof this thing.

I tested it out with a buddy of mine. Audio and stability seemed OK. I was doing around 5 watts. Suffers from all sorts of overload, though. I think it'll be a fun little unit. I'll let this pop my cherry, then graduate to something better in the future.

it might be part of the russian investigation

Had a long winded gabfest earlier. Talked for over an hour on simplex. Didn't measure output, but I imagine it was 5 watts or little more. Receive sounded great and my transmissions got good reports. It got a little warm. Nothing terrible, but I feel it needs more heat sink or a little fan. Worked well on local repeaters.

Nice fun little unit.

It's a neat little unit. It's a good deal for the money. At first, I thought it was a few hertz off, but it seems fairly spot on now. Might have just been cold at first. Definitely a cheap way to experience 2 meter SSB/CW.
