I have a new IMAX2000 w/new coax up on a 18' pole, it will talk farther than I can hear. The Palamar 500 Elite AKA Combo does from 150 swing to 280 swing.

I plan to put up a new Tornado soon, I've had it put back for 4-5 years. I am curious as to the difference it will make, I've heard the IMAX picks up more trash than a metal antenna. I sure loved the simple setup of the Imax, put it together and stand it up--1.3 SWR's and talk away.

Has anyone done this swap or an A99 to the Tornado?

The variations between most omni verticals is less than you may think. To notice any improvement with a 5/8 wave, it would need a full set of 1/4 wavelength radials to keep the TOA close to the horizon. Otherwise, the Vector 4000 and Gain-Master are about the only two options for improvement. Even they would only show slight gains in distant signals. You'd probably be more satisfied spending the time and money getting the existing antenna up higher, especially if it's only 18 feet off the ground now.

I have to add that what you are seeing is the problem with linears. Unless the people you are talking with are using similar power, you will never hear them as far as they can hear you. Without installing a directional beam, the only other thing you can do on your end to improve their coverage, is to raise your antenna height. Changing to a different ground plane at the same height is not going to do much.

Thank you for the information,
I've got a couple of options to get more height and I'm going to put my best foot forward to implemening one option or the other.

Our radio station tower is just North of me,, not a 1/2 mile. I'm in the highest point for miles around, lol that's good for being in a fairly flat area. I'm sure hoping that it makes a nice difference if I can get the bottom of the antenna at about 35'.

My cousin is into 10 meters, he used to do CB but now he's a tech in ham radio.
He just put up three 40' towers a quarter wava apart and put an astron99 on each tower. he said he cut the coax for each a99 excactly four waves long for 28.4 where he talks.
I hope I get this right, he has all 3 a99 going to an alpha-delta bradn 3 way antenna switch and he said when he selects one the other two go to ground through the antnena switch which he said makes like a 2 element beam in 3 choseable directions but its instant and no rotor. since he alraedy had the tower sections I guess it was his best option.

So he made a triangle of towers with A99's on top?

If this is for real your cousin:

A) ...has way too much time on his hands
B)...probably will be disappointed with the results

i'm just blown away that he put up three towers just for this project. That's dedication.

He says he loves it because its hotter gain adn more power haneling then the super scaner and he needs to cut down his local inteference from a cber of all things only half mile from him so the two reflecting a99 antenas work real great he said

he just buried about 5 feet of the towers in the ground after he coated it with some rubber paint and it was easy with his backho

As a technician class license holder "power" should not be a consideration.
 
Super Scanner.

It was pupular in the 70's.
A good friend of mine had one on the roof of his shop. It was taken down a few yrs back when he had the roof replaced.

Yep. The MS-119 made by Antenna Specialists. A really nice antenna. I used to run one up 110 feet just outside Toronto. Still have one spanking new in the box and no it's not for sale :) I got that and the M-134 "Mariner" 5 element beam from a storage unit sale. The Mariner is what I just put up at the shop. It was also brand new in the box. I did upgrade the gamma match on it so it will handle more power.
