Growing up with CB in the late 60's/early 70's I had a plethora of magazines and catalogs (i.e. -"wish" books) to choose from, the most popular wish books being the ones from Echo and Henshaws. I spent a lot of time looking at these, as well as memorizing radio specifications from various yearly Buyer's Guides. Getting married I took a brief break from CB so other than a cheap Midland I kept in the trunk for road trips, I was out of the loop from '78 to '83. Imagine my surprise when I returned to the hobby:
  • CB Magazines had virtually disappeared from news-stand shelves
  • CB shops were very few and far between
  • CB Buyers Guides had very few pages to them, if they existed at all
  • And CB Radio, as a topic, was relegated to "Fad" status.
That's when I heard about the 80's version of the CB Wish book - The Copper Electronics catalog. Looking back, this monthly catalog, printed on the cheapest paper on Earth, became my one-and-only "Wish Book". I recently uncovered a stack of these the other day, and say what you may about those dubious customer satisfaction stories, the Copper catalog, like a lifesaver thrown to someone treading water, kept me afloat until the Internet matured. Here are few pages that I scanned...

I’m surprised at how cheap some of the microphones were. D104 tug8 only 29.99... I just got one in the mail that I bought for $33.00 including shipping.
I thought the same thing, especially with regards to the Astatic D104m6 and 575. I don't think it was in this catalog, but 104 was about $20 more than the 575. If I had seen the future I would have bought a bunch of the 575's considering how much money they fetch today!

Thank you for these.

Yes, in 1979 we moved into the city of Deer Park, outside of Houston.

At that time,
There were three full time CB shops in business,
There were four houses on MY BLOCK with antennas (one with a 4 element beam) and the street behind us had two more.... PLUS I could drive all over town and find antennas put up,
I could drive 2 minutes to an electronics shop where I could choose and purchase volumes of SAMS CB Photofacts...

Now,
The only shop I know if is tucked behind a truck stop way over on I-10 in Baytown,
I can not find a bas CB antenna anywhere. ANYWHERE!
I can't even find an electronics shop to go buy parts from anymore. Have to web order everything.

With that, I love running into online caches of magazines, ads, catalogs, memorabilia...

Boy, that brings back memories! (y) My memory is failing me at the moment, but there was one shop in South/Southwest Houston, another (good one too) off 59 near Crosstimber's, one in NW Houston (woman owner) near Antoine, and the BEST one far North of Houston - "Sonny's" :)
