Now before you get all excited that I am going to transmit in the ham bands I am NOT.. Just want to listen my question is what kind of antenna would I need … I don't know what frequencys to listen to.

Thanks in Advance

To listen to ham bands, you could just listen to many of the web based SDR receivers.

To answer your question,

If you have at least 1 tall tree, for an inverted V or 2 tall trees about 80 to 100 feet apart or more for each dipole end to hang from, a simple G5RV wire dipole works good enough on ham bands between 80m and 6m. 30 ft is a good enough minimum height.

If you do decide to get licensed, you'll have your first multiband antenna ready to go!

These antennas typically sell for under $60.

Aww heck just key the mic n let er rip n tell us what next.haha

Bobby,
Fogdog's suggestion is spot on. I have a simple inverted V wire dipole for transmitting on 20 meters. However, I often listen to the other bands including 11 meters. Mine is on a 18' mast with the ends sloping toward and tied off with paracord at my 6' privacy fence. Works great for shortwave listening too. (y)
