I run a Maco V5/8-5000 as my omni but run two dipoles a vert and a horizontal. I need a tuner bc they are not easily accessed for tuning trimming etc (I suggest dialing them in and not needing a tuner). However I find myself on my vertical dipole more than the Maco and the V5/8-5000 is mounted 25' higher ! Both of my dipoles are 12or14awg? stranded copper running to a pvc home depot center feed ! I have been talking tons of skip on the vert and using it to talk local as well ! The horizontal is the only antenna I have ever talked to the U.K. and New Zealand on from New Jersey , but to be fair its rare compared to skip on the vert ! I must have moved the first one 10-12 times from flat to inverted V to L to inverted L and they all have their positives ! If you have the freedom to stretch it all over the yard/driveway/attic whatever take your time and spend a night in each configuration ! If limited time and access I say go for a vert ,mine is a 12' piece of plastic wire conduit screwed 25' up in a dead tree with the reflector leg hooked to paracord to a bungi cord and a metal curb stake in my lawn lol and I cant believe the DX contacts I have made !! My horizontal is on 6" gutter nails (insulated) standing 3-5" off of my longest gutter that runs east to west .
Just go for it , have fun with it !! Tell us and share pics of what works out best ! There are a million guys with A99's and old-school Cross-Bows and even 3/4 & 5/8th wave omnis that would love to hear your pros and cons !
Oh and my only real important 2cents , If running a vert or horizontal make sure the feed coax comes off at a hard 90 degree angle ! With the L and V it didn't matter much but with flat or tall wires they like the feed perpendicular to the direction of the pole! Not the easiest to accomplish in some installs but certainly helped me get the swr down !
