Stryker SR-955HPC receive audio quality

Gold Finger from WWPDX has some cap changes that can be made to make the audio wider. You could probably just do the receive if that's all you wanted.

You might have to be a member to get to that part of the site, I am not sure.

TX all modes:
Change C534, C571, C570 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized
C530 is already 1uF.
AM: Change C527, C153, C152 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized. Change E14 to 330uF 25 volt or higher Electrolytic, observe polarity.
FM: Change C528. C536 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized
SSB: C528. C539 are already 1uF

Direct inject at C152

The echo board will likely have to be bypassed for these mods to work completely.
Edit: The echo board looks like it has all 1uF caps in the audio chain except C900 which is a .1uF Changing it to a 1uF will fatten up the lows some. Bypassing the echo will still be better for full audio bandwidth.

RX all modes:
Change C136, C137, C165 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized
Change E10 to a 1000uF 25 volt or higher Electrolytic, observe polarity.
More highs: Make C37 lower in value
AM: change C163 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized
FM: Change C135 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized
SSB: Change C197 to 1uF or 2.2uF non polarized

Got to ragchew for about 2 hours last night. The AM audio is pretty good. FM audio is excellent. USB audio is just a little tinny but still acceptable. Impressed with how good the receiver is. 955 actually "heard" a few AM stations my FT-950 couldn't. I did find out that on USB it is off frequency by about 30khz. LSB is dead on. The frequency issue may have something to do with my audio quality. I think I figured out hot to get into the test menus so hope to try to adjust the USB receive later today. Thanks Shadetree for the cap info.

Welcome! I run a 955 as a CB and unfortunately the receiver can be harsh at times. Maybe too sensitive, I run the RF gain at about 9:00. I have a clear speech DSP speaker that helps but I think my biggest problem is background noise from man made sources. I am interested to see others responses to this problem.

Are you referring to the West Mountain DSP / CLR speaker? I recently ordered one and waiting for it to arrive tomorrow. Is it worth the cost?

Yes that is the one. Its hard to tell how well it pulls signals out of the mud because it makes its own noise like a waterfall if you turn the processing up too high. Signals that you can already hear, it seems to help. I am going to put mine on an A, B switch so I can compare it to a regular speaker.

Getting a A / B switch is a good idea. Let me know how it works-out and how the test comparison goes. There aren't any radio shops in my area for me to get a A / B switch. Maybe I don't want to know the results because of the cost of the speaker, ha! ha! ha!

The CLR Speaker arrived today and the sound is clear andause every time I adjust the touch
crisp. I like having the volume contro11 l on the speaker bec
the squelch knob on the Stryker 955 my fat finger makes contact with the volume knob.

Let me try this again.
The CLR speaker sounds crisp and clear. Having the volume control on the speaker is a nice feature because I'm always touching the volume knob at the same time I adjust the squelch on the Stryker 955.

Let us know how you like it after running a bit...I’m very curious what you think as far as how it works with weak signal SSB!

Will do!
I am curious also and I'll have to wait until the DXng starts. I did notice an improvement when listening to a couple of local guys in their mobiles earlier.
Is it worth the cost? It's hard to tell. I guess we are paying for the engineering, design, patents, etc. etc. Sort of like the expensive Third Brake Light Antenna Adapter I recently bought.
As another forum member mentioned, it has a peculiar "water-fall" sound when idle. If you lived next door I would loan it you before you buy one.
I'm waiting for my new TS DX500V to arrive today so as I can hook it up to the 955.

GOOD DEAL on the DX500! Glad you went for it! I’m very very tempted to buy another for the house!

You are correct, a DSP speaker won't give you more bass. It will probably have less bass.

A true statement!
My new West Mountain Clear Speech Speaker arrived a couple of hours ago. It is a very crisp and clear sounding speaker but it definitely has less base sound than the radio's speaker and the Cobra HG500 and I'm OK with it.
I am experimenting by placing three layers of paper towels over the front of the speaker which has sort of added a little base sound. Next step is to cover the speaker with a cotton or wool winter sock. What the heck, I've got nothing else to do.....lol...lol...lol!
I'm getting to like this retirement life.
