Using a small satellite dish as an 11 meter antenna

Not to start up an old topic... seeing there was never any pictures... But if the antenna was horizontal, with the tip pointing to the north, wouldnt this talk east and west? He was probably getting his rejection from the fact it was mounted horizontal. Not because of the dish. Thats the take I took on it. I think this is the Null area many were talking about. Which would be directly in front of it, which is the actually direction he was intending to talk. Not to mention Id have to be proven the swr could actually get that low on such a contraption... And did I mention I seen guys talking off coke cans with a tuner... Worked, for like 1/2 mile of open field... NOT 200 miles.
I've built some crazy antennas, but are based on good theory, but nothing like this... I spend a LOT of time building, trying, tuning, and making new antenna. Love it! Yet I dont think I would have ever considered this one. :headbang
WHy I've not gotten around to it. But I said I would, so in time, I will. . .

I don't have anything special in mind. I just said I'd hook up a mobile antenna to a dish and see what happens. I figure it will be the chore of a few minutes and have no expectations but to do as I had said I would.
The real thing will be that I choke the coax and see the results without the coax being used as part of the antenna.

I know that this is an old thread but this is the first time I have read it,
For interest sake... I have experimented using a Foxtel sat dish in the past set up as a reflector with a folded dipole for our uhf cb band (477mhz).
It worked ok, nothing special but for limited space it did the trick when I was living in a high rise apartment in the city

A dish that size serve no real purpose on 11m, however in the 2.5GHz range it is quite useful

To really get any gain you would need a dish that is around 95 times the size of the dish you are using...

You know those old like 12 foot satelite dishes you see abandonded in old people's yards? well those are useful around 2m... You see what I am getting at yet?

I cant get any contacts with my homebrew satelite dish, but the dipole werks great horizontal or vertical.

Prelude - yes I know this thread has been dead for 10+ years or so but I found so much negative stuff in here that I just cant understand it ? So Im bringing it back to life and here we go ! I have met a ton of brilliant guys here and not 1 of them had a single negative word to say about this thread . So that makes me believe I along with the help of these forums and all the smart people I have met on here will get this antenna OTA and doing a decent job ! I wont compare it to a 1/4 or 5/8 wave but lets see if I can beat a cheapie mobile antenna or one of those "no ground" 3' base sticks .

Who is coming with me ???

Ok screw it !! Ill not only BUMP BUMP BUMP the thread , Ill build one with pics !!! I have a Direct TV dish on the side of my house ! One thing I do KNOW about antenna theory is , its just that theory(real life changes and interrupts this theory all the time ). If you knows me you know I'm not an electrical engineer , nor a service technician . Hell Im a dude with a soldering iron and I love projects ! I am also NOT afraid to fail so nothing to lose here . I have built competition stereo systems in show cars , built big blocks for drag boats , 2-stroke quads and bikes , fixed flat screen tvs , you name it lol even a 12hp Racing lawn Tractor haha:ROFLMAO::LOL: . I dive into all types of stuff and 90% of the fun for me is just learning as I go . I HAVE burnt up some radios , blown up a few race motors and made mistakes but I can honestly say I have enjoyed every bit of it ! I cant stand when people shit all over an idea because a book says it wont work . So again like many of my posts Im willing to take the chance here just to prove to myself I can do it ! Once I get the dish off the house Ill link this thread to a new one if no-one is following along but I have a feeling that lots of guys will have opinions on this and I'm willing to take the hit to see where this takes me !

Now if you click on my name you will see I have many irons in the fire here . I will give this priority based on the types of responses I get with this first post !

I say go for it! If you get anything out of it great. If not, so what. Who knows, might have some fun along the way with a great story to boot. And that my friend is what "it's" all about.
