President Lincoln II Plus

How do I know if I'm getting the newest version with the clarifier option? I saw something about the serial number etc. But I'm nervous to purchase and it be an older stocked version with it the clarifier feature.

I just bought one from Walcott (y). Ultra fast turnaround - Sunday clicked to buy (with mod), it shipped on Monday morning and I received it on Wednesday.

BTW, while the clarifier can be set for R-only or TR via the menu, it resets every time you power the rig off, thus you have to do it all over again.

I read where people were having that problem too. I thought maybe they were forgetting to save it in the menu setting. There echo and some of the other settings don't save either unless you click save on the button below menu.

I leave mine on R and never noticed this until Woody’s post. Damn sure...if there’s a way to save it I can’t find it.

So it looks like both the places I was looking at online should have the newest version. That's awesome news guys thanks

I also got both mine from Walcott, and had an experience the same as Woody’s. No complaints!

Wonder if it works prior to conversion with the resistor mod and stays locked it for the HAM bands?

Just a random thought...

At least when you hit menu the last used setting that comes up first. So unless you’re using many menu functions, it’ll only ever be a couple clicks away.

But, for anyone that always wants rt, could still be a major annoyance.

Maybe someone has a non converted rig then can try it with and sees if it stays locked. Or temporarily lift one leg of the resistor and try and post results. ?

That is just dumb.
Why give you the option in the menu if it won't stick?

Because having a clarifier adjust both RX and TX is dumb. You only want it to adjust RX only. Think about it, what happens if it does both? You transmit and receive on fA, you receive a station who is supposed to be on fA but is fA+1 to you. So you adjust your locked clarifier until he sounds right. So now your radio is both receiving and transmitting on fA+1. But now you sound off frequency to him because you've just adjusted your transmit frequency so he adjusts his locked clarifier so you sound right to him but now to you he's transmitting off frequency again so you adjust, he ends up adjusting again and on every over you both end up adjusting the clarifier until you end up running out of adjustment or actually changing up a channel and winding the clarifier over to the left.

Leave the transmit frequency alone, allow each person to use their RX clarifier until they're happy with the received audio and then you're both not chasing each other up and down the 10kHz width of the channel.

What ?
My daily driver is a Kenwood TS-830. It has a "clarifier" a big one, right in the middle of the face, can't miss it. ;)
I do have options for XIT and RIT as well .

Okay I've had my fun now to be serious. Having a clarifier adjust both RX and TX is dumb? Fixing the TX on a class D part 95 radio I'm sure had some rational reason at the time but it was the Federal Clown Commission so who knows. Fixed TX and variable RX fine tuning works great , as you say , between TWO stations. Add a THIRD station with yet a different TX frequency and it all goes to krap. Add a fourth and ....

This is one of the pitfalls of channelized operation with fixed TX and Receive Incremental Tuning.

I understand the FCC's reticence toward turning VFO's loose on 11m as when it was originally acquired from the amateur service it was first channelized and then there were remote control frequencies between channel 3&4 , 7&8, 11&12, 15&16 and 19&20. What is forgotten is that the space between 22&23 held two more aux or RC channels as well . This is why in frequency order its channel 22 , 24 , 25, 23. Uncle Chuck didn't want to waste the space. So I can see why Uncle Chuck didn't want to turn VFO's loose on 11m.

Just some observations
why 23 channels ?
why then 40 channels with the above odd "map"?
Why wasn't 27.000 to 27.500 allocated?
or
Why wasn't 27.1 channel one?
Wilma or Betty?
Ginger or Mary Anne?
Lucy or Ethel?
inquiring minds want to know !

My first foray in SSB was with drifty exports and I chased the clarifier (unlocked) around constantly. Still, I had difficulty dialing anyone in, and was constantly told I was off freq. A firm detent at 12 o’clock that was always in the wrong spot made it even worse. A PITA, at least I thought.

With the Lincoln (or all newer radios I’ve tried), I rarely even touch the clarifier. Spoiled rotten now, I guess.

I’m sure there’s something to be said for QSOs involving multiple parties, but haven’t run into any issues yet. Then again, I have only one local and am usually just DXing. On the occasions I’ve talked to groups of individuals that were local to each other...still didn’t seem to have any issue.

I guess only time will tell if my thoughts on this change..but for now all I can say is that it’s strange to me that any menu setting would default with power cycling. That just seems silly.
