I thought I'd post this for anyone contemplating a purchase of the Ye-Old Turner Plus 2 Hand Mic. These were as popular as the desktop version for over 10 years, but when buying one on Ebay you should take the precaution to ask the buyer if they have opened it up to check for a cruddy battery, or coroded battery connectors, and if they refuse - walk away....

I bought a couple last year where they claimed it tested good with no corrosion only to find out that wasn't true, and if it's a buyer-risks-all auction your screwed . It's understandable if the seller knows nothing about radios or microphones and is not confident enough to take the 4 screws out of the backside to take a look --- but a few will. The last few auctions over the last 60 days I've given instructions w/photo's on how-2-do-it-what-2-look-4 and only 3 sellers out of 11 were willing (of those 3, one just had slight contact corrosion while the other two had moldy toxic batteries in them). I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a working microphone (Lord knows I have enough parts), but my pain is your knowledge gain :(.

(I believe this one is salvageable because nothing ooze onto the other side where all the components are)

I bought an old astatic minuteman II, on eBay a few months ago, it had an old 7v 0r whatever it is mercury battery probably from the 70s in it, some how by the grace of god, it did not leak. there was a very small amount of corrosion on the end of one of the wires inside the yellow plastic battery holder. I still need to test that mic out. And wire it fo a 4 or 5 pin cobra. I think I’m to the point where I’m not even going to try and buy any more old hand power mics, because I feel like 9 times out of 10 it will have had a battery left in it for that last 10,15,20 30 or even 40 years now.

Lol, the FIRST THING I look for is an open battery compartment. Even if I dont have a lick of interest in buying ill message the seller and ask them to post pics.
I like the Realistic 21-1173 amplified desk mic aka The Plastic Turner because it uses the same mic element and amplification board and is usually half the price of a Turner.
The problem is this mic uses 2 AA batteries which most people forget to remove before tossing in the closet.
You have to be REAL DILIGENT and ultra savvy when dealing on ebay.

Almost all mine are fine. I had one that had an exploded battery.
