Afternoon all, I recently installed a cobra 29 comp. From your experience what mic will send best ? I have only 2 right now to choose from. Also it’s in a four wheeler not a big truck. Skythumper or stock mic like a cobra coffin style. Thanks guys

I would try a ranger sra 198 noise cancellation mike with that radio. They are a fairly cheap but well made microphone IMO. I have been told it has more bass then my rf limited 2018.

I’ll second that. (y) The 198 comes standard on selected radios. Just be sure to crowd the mic (no speaking into it from 2” away), and it’s top-notch. I had one on a Connex CX-366CE once and always received great audio reports. It also has some heft to it which you’ll like. :)

Good or not the name Skythumper sounds all buisness..lol Is it noise cancelling? I have never seen one myself.
Cheers!

The SkyThumper ST-65DX was patterned off of the RoadKing RK56. They’re both noise cancelling, but the SkyThumper wasn’t on the market very long. The old RoadKing RK56 was favored. Notice I said “old” RoadKing. The newer RK56 clones are also inferior IMO. I’d go with the Ranger sra 198. You can’t beat their quality and price. After buying your first one, you may end up buying more like I did.

Quality has dropped way off on many products. 20 years ago all I ran in the company car was an RK56 with my Magnum Delta Force. Sounded great and ignored interior and road noise. No telling where and how cheap current mics are made.

If you can get your hands on a Skythumper ST65 go for it. Skythumper was the house brand name for products from Sparky's CB Shack. Since Sparky is no longer with us. Custom CB Radios may have some left. It's a clean sounding noise cancelling mic. I still have the one sparky sold me when he first got the in. I remember him telling me how pleased he was to find a Chinese manufacturer for the microphone who would use a decent mic element.

Give the superstar dm507-4 a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how good these mics sound, especially on comp tuned 29. I started using them about 2 years ago after someone recommended them and never looked back.

I bought one for the spares bag. About a half dozen mics not counting OEM supplied mics.

Nothing wrong with it, but it hasn’t yet made it to a top three choice with the radios I have. Other aftermarket mics are just that much better (A636L my go-to).

As it’s under $20 it’s an outstanding backup mic in a mobile.

Lightweight, and feels nice in hand.

Worth spending on it.
