D104M6 vs D104M6

My old crusty 575 just came in the mail. Going to have to do another test this week.

I did a quick check with talkback to make sure it worked..it does. Not that TB is a good representation of anything...but it so far sounds different than the modified D104.

I don’t know...I like the mod’d mic better on that test (ssb), even though it’s so slightly different.

You are a BAAD influence.......recieved the 198 and another D104M6B today.

Could you post up a pic of the modification you did?

Please let me know what you think of the 198. I just did a test of several noise cancelling mics, but did it on AM using RF gain because I was tired of running back and forth tweaking clarifiers.

Anyway...did a Telex Turner RK56, new Turner RK56, Workmans RK56 clone, Ranger SRA198, Astatic 636L, and a Stryker.

I actually liked the sound of the 636L the best, but power is way down. All the Turners sounded good, but I kind of liked the Workman clone the best of the 3...not as deep, but very clean sounding. The SRA 198 sounded excellent to my ears. The Stryker seemed to show the highest power, but sounded dark and muddy to my ears.

The RD104E was supposed to be included, but it decided not to play again.

The D104 mod...the blue resistor next to the header connector is the one I replaced. Was a 270k, now a 1.5M.

Trying to find some foam to seal up the element better now...I need some sort of “donut” shapers piece, I suppose, but I may just try some poly-fill.

Ok...so three donuts cut out of quilt batting seems to have sealed it up pretty well. Now we’ll have to try to stack it up with the 575.
I agree with the 636L comment, that mic should get a lot more love. If I really need to push Mr Jumbo I wont use my amp mics, the 636L gives great audio with the high power always. Nice info on the mic tests Dan, enjoyed the post. 73's

The circled capacitor paralleled to the element on a 575M6 schematic...does anyone know if this cap is for RF bypass, or does it serve a function with respect to audio (tone, quality, volume, etc)?

All these Astatic power mics dating back ages are virtually identical except a couple capacitors and the lone resistor value.
