Whats the price of a decent new multi band ssb mobile rig and a 2 pill or 4 pill amp? You can go used and get a clean unmolested 2950dx for $200 and then a good amp.
Not a SSB radio but here's a review of the Road King 5640 Blue Light Special!
This will be brief because the radio is on its way back to the seller because the front is scratched.
a. The noise canceling mic cancels everything, including my voice. With my lips pressed against the lip guard and practically yelling, I was still unable to get the needle on the radio to move.
b. The meter on the radio showed less than 2 watts out. My Daiwa 901 showed 1.5.
c. I know now where all gripes in other reviews about the blue lights being too bright came from. They are! The first thing I did was reach for the switch to change from bright to dim only to discover they WERE on dim!
Think it's back to ebay in search of a good vintage base CB. So much for the modern technology.

Sorry to hear this, I though owning a Cherokee Niterider 150 was the worst idea to ever have a radio that not only lit up your dash, you also can use it to attract bugs...not good for nights when you're the Fox in those Fox-Hound hunts for weekend gamers out in the stix' - man you got bugs you never knew existed let alone identify.
That sounds like more fun than a lizard caught in a bug zapper!

Well, Chameleons' in the group were angry over being out shined - they casted shade over it...
(I mean really folks, if you ever wanted to let your lite shine forth, put this thing in...)
I owned one of these back in the day, and it did perform quite well. Yes, the Clarifier on it drifted like any other Galaxy but it stayed within the ballpark of most other radios so you could tune in someone for a quik chat while sittin' waiting for the car to warm up. (single pot of a dual ganged shaft so lobbing was possible) Although it claimed to be dimmable, their idea of dim was either glaring bright landing lights, Glorious Blue HID in Dim - or just plain "off" via a switch or you unplugged the EL backlite power harness as an extra step if you were heading out into the night. IT was dangerous at times to use when you could lose your night-time vision if you had to fiddle with it too much.
There were times I did have to disconnect that harness so I could have a "Normal radio" but who'd want a "Ghost White" face of a radio? Kinda' had to love using this thing like you'd have to face mom in the morning...not at her best but loved you anyways...just keep your mouth shut and focus on the chores at hand...you'll live to see another day sort of thing.

Go with the 980/203 combo. I have heard many 980s on ssb & they sound really good.
You know that if you get that 520, you are only gonna be happy with it for a week. Then you're gonna want to pick up a ssb rig...

Here's my useless $0.02..
I have a mid-90s Galaxy DX88HL, and does it drift? Only really at first startup until it has been on for a few minutes. I use it as a base unit, as no room for it in the CJ5, and I'd hate to ruin it if the windshield leaks, caught topless in rain, etc. I've always heard of a "crystal oven" idea, putting a wheat lamp on the crystals, but never figured out exactly which one it is (I'm the type I know just enough to get myself into trouble and maybe back out of it on my own, just look at my posts here!). I used it for years as a mobile, and worked great. Never used SSB much though. For now, I turn it on when I first set down beside it and turn it off when I leave. It is beside my work desk.
I have a DX939B, it has that backlit display. I bought it used, and the backlight wasn't plugged in. Plugged it back in, and unplugged it within a minute - that high pitch whine was too much for me! It is my main use AM base. I like the blue lights, and the 88's meter isn't working. I just switch back and forth with an antenna switch.
Powermax power supply, mentioned earlier, is what I have. I was using a 30A switching supply from Amazon, but it is now running the DX44V on the end table in the living room (connected to the antenna switch on the other radios). The Powermax runs the 88 and a Superstar 400 no problem, along with my homebrew stereo (Desktop speakers, but using a mobile eq, eBay 1500w amp for 2 CV 10s, all supplied audio from my laptop). I have the audio equipment on a relay so I can power it down to talk, no feedback that way.
I love my Galaxies, obviously as I have 3 of them, but I am always on the lookout for an upgrade. I'd love the "Ham rig on 11m" idea, but out of my price range right now. I just got a side mic 148GTL on eBay, looking forward to trying it out when it get here.

Love the 980, a great cb radio, talk back is very handy when your trying to tune a power mic; some are very hard to find the sweet spot, slap some ear cans on in talkback mode, and you will know what your sounding like. Allows you to get your mic really dialed in. Other than that, it stays shut off for sure.

I never use Talkback & I only have a few radios that have it & I wish they did not.I have plenty of other radios that I can listen to for adjustments.If I were a Technician I would clip the wires that make the Talkback work at all but since I am not I just leave them in the Off position at all times.It is the only thing about the 980SSB that I dislike.
