What is the SSB mobil CB these days.

Slow,

You may need some sleep. Not sure what you are trying to get at.

Were the lot lizards evacuating the truck stop?

Could you please translate that from delirious truckereeze to something I can comprehend.

Oh, the story before. Anyone thought I was making fun of cripples. The “professional” ones hang out at truck stops.

Too many miles. Fort Myers to Columbia, SC via Jaxville. Escaped from America’s Deathtrap again.

On my 980 I simply switched over to an SRA-198 to get improved reports on the 980 currently installed.

If you're referring to the ones that say "Need Help - Money No Job"... Boy to those guys get around...

Same guy in Utah, then in Colorado...

Then of all places - Fort Wayne...like that's a hot spot - so in some ways of thought, it's more of "I'm done with this Town - Get Me Outta' Here"

15 should not be a problem on ssb, I talk to a buddy every day he is 27 miles out, and we have big hills between us, we always have ok to excellent comms. Both of us have antennas 36 feet to the feed, mine a full wave loop, his a antron 99 with radials.

Locals here are on 21AM, nobody local on SSB. So yeah, I'm stretching it out a little, but the DX88HL on high and the DX939 full out works decent barefoot, but sometimes the noise is too high that I need the help.

Sounds like the 980 is a good route to keep in mind, but I just have issues with the full digital front end - I don't like a lot of light on the dash, that's a little too flashy.

Sigh, you bring up a good point that I don't like to beat this radio up over - but it is a problem on my end when I'm working during the day and have to wear eye protection as part of the job.

It's a good radio for what you get, but the "mirror face" is a little hard to take at times - the backlit brightness for the display can really "fade" and the mirror finish face comes into play in high - reflection incidental lighting you get in sunny days of driving on the road and you're wearing polarized sunglasses.

Using this in combination with the glasses too, can add a bit of a headache to seeing what is on the display when you need the glasses to protect yourself from the glare - out there - arriving to you along with all that sun.

It's a washout at times - you can't avoid it, but it also doesn't help when you need to use polarized glasses on top of using a radio with the LCD display type that uses a polarizing filter to develop contrast - tilt your head one way or another - you can lose the display.

Anyone whoms' owned a Midland 77-115 or a 77-120 knows that too. Even the newer President line of McKinleys, Andys', Jacksons - any with the backlit LED LCD display are all prone to the loss / fade / blackout when you put your radio on the dash and you are using polarized glasses - you have to tilt back n' forth to find or recover the display. That tiny print on the LCD front can wash out easily enough.

You can fully adjust the brightness so it's very low if that's what you like if my memory is correct? I have not used mine in a little while so I may be thinking about the wrong radio of the 160 plus that I currently own?

The 980 has many colors and dims way down. Hard to see from some angles even full bright sitting on desk. That mirror lens is a draw back. I don't suggest putting any radio on the dash. Heat, sunlight, and thieves.

Don't like the inability to read screen, but do like the quality and stability. No drift issues. Good RX/TX. Better reports with the wafer removed from stock mic. Even better with D104M6B. Mine is 4+watt DK, out the box, run it with a 450LD.

McKinley does real good with same setup. But dropped variable pwr down to about 2~3watt DK.

Both have led backlight with similar visual restraints. But that's a trade off to me.

For 28 years ran a Uniden PC66, had issues reading that screen, too. Due to location. Counted channels.

Once you set the radio you should leave it. Eyes on the road.

This mod works great! Just checked in with the locals and all said I am MUCH louder than last night. And now have good forward swing. :D

Thanks for the suggestion, Shadetree! (y)

But can Undertaker hear you? Texas-wise, he’s just down the street. .
I’ll be back in Fort Worth soon enough. Right around the corner. Keep up the voice-strengthening. (And the 2 for $105 deal on the KL203).

Glad you got the 980. I think it’s the default choice these days for price & performance. After that, things branch off. Galaxy in one direction, President in another.

Got out of the snow coming down The Gorge between Asheville & Knoxville and we old-timers had a radio parley about them young whippersnappers thinks they’s drivers. A couple of whom piped up. But got 86’d with a Galaxy blackjack. Now, . . . THAT was funny.

Those eastern Kentucky boys play for keeps.

Guess you see and hear a little of everything out there in the real world.
My world is tiny and that’s okay.

The locals I’m talking with call me high tech. They mostly run old tube radios. I hope to someday. :D

We hear what’s around us. Not too far.

I recommend you make a road trip to OKC. Nearest city center (IH40 crossing IH35) will give you more fun than should be legal what with the characters on AM-19 there most evenings. Some mornings. Hell, most any time I drive thru.

There are a few city parks I’d try near that.

There’s also a couple curmudgeons try to stir the s-pot. Get real frustrated they can’t get a rise out of the regulars. Goes straight past funny. Rattlesnake could give El Senor Trump a tip or two on how to troll.

That's if you can stay on that stretch of road. That patch is worse than any Louisiana hwy. Bout lost it couple times rolling through that God forbidden pot-holed broken up and down Hwy pulling weight. Even worse on a bike headed out to Double D's.

Used to be. There’s still a stretch heading west that’s rough.

With a few exceptions, those stretches of “bad Interstate” are now gone in the US from IH35 to IH95. In some cases, complete replacement. In others, remediation.

Some engineering and organizational know-how got applied. Machinery, procedures, etc. Its impressive the speed and efficient traffic-management while underway.

Granted that it should have been done thirty years ago. Done, not started. The other puzzle piece is three traffic lanes (and separation of entry/exit lanes at a cloverleaf). With three, everyone can move along well. Get around problems. Re-building Bridges is the weak point.

Rural stretches of Interstate that catapulted me from the seat just a few years ago on IH40 in the Panhandle, or IH55 near the New Madrid fault are now nearly unnoticeable.

Where three travel lanes exist with proper shoulders, etc, traffic flow is what one expects from Interstate travel. KY is closer to having the whole of the state done. IH75 from ATL to Tampa, etc.

IH35 from Santone to DFW may now be three lanes, but using the 130 Toll Road still a requirement from Seguin to Georgetown. Even it is starting to jam at the northern end.

A Tollpass is your friend. Any of the Texas cities.

I use to come through the Gorge all the time back when I was driving long haul.

Some of those curves are designed wrong. The road is beveled to the shoulder at a slight downward slope in some curves. It's exactly the opposite of how Nascar race tracks are designed in the high banked turns. I guess the highway engineers designed it that way for drainage, but it's awful for traction.

Keep it out of the ditches!
