HG Transistor input power question.

I like the way you think, lol!
Was going for the 1600 myself but the new ones have the DEIs and also I thought the same thing of having to upgrade some stuff, again, and not into it so looked for something like the TS500DX cause they have DEIs in the new ones as well and I have seen tests with them and wouldn't use them. I'll be running this as per 2879 datasheet specs as I did with the TS500DX. That amp is 16 years old. I had it for 6 years and a friend had it since new at least 10 years before that run the same way and its still going now even after I sold it.

Life is much simpler just babying things and letting them idle along...so much less to worry about.

With truck the truck running at high idle I see 400 or so watts from my DX500. But, I most often run the amp off just my truck's battery voltage, and typically for hours on end. Can't imagine it's making but 300 watts or so, but I don't really care. In the alternative, if I fired up the truck and maxed out the input - running everything full tilt - it might just barely make a perceptible difference on the other end.
Righ???
If you want to see 1k on your meter then you need a 2k amp and you'll never buy another. Buy a 500 and run it wide open daily and it simply wont last especially with this dei and hg junk and with whats left of the toshibas selling for $200+ each its best to baby your amps.

No truer words were spoken...

Best to run it Gently like it's brand new...stays "fresher" that way longer...

My earlier post was regarding this - how many feel they can Comp Stomp only to find the best parts, and the days those parts would have done the job, are now gone. Simply because the "ideal window of operation" you originally tuned for a different platform now they upgraded to another and the user thought they had the amp tuned for using the originals - it's now out the window and you're left to figure out a method to the madness of tuning the newer parts to meet the platform.
  • The looks some people give you when they get the news that the amp won't do what it used to using the older - simply unobtainable original - we have to use the newer replacements - we get yelled at for it and take the blame and they take their work elsewhere...when will they learn?
    • We didn't say it could not be done, just it's done differently now...oops, too late, there's the two strips of smoking firestone going down the street with the Cops following in hot pursuit...
  • To review the Youtube stuff, the DEI's and HG's - being nearly the same DIE only a compact chip meaning the substrates are smaller - equates to a different set of rules and laws regarding Smith Charts and the Impedance Paradigms.
  • We haven't even touched on the Thermals - LAVA anyone?

  • It used to be 10-ohm smoke, now? It's more of Popcorn (Salts) and Ceramic (pottery). Take their vids with a grain of such...
  • Face it, the new swing thing with MOSFET Final Outputs the radios drive the things are being too exact in their input to output followings, (hey, were talking spurries and the dynamics) JMHO - are the real reasons these things are turning into bricks.
  • Here's a way to think this..
    • Remember the Bi-polar! Yes - that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you use those kinds of amps - olden days, like a Model - T or maybe the Big Fins of the 50's - you had a smooth operation and you knew when to quit cooking your grill because the Heat sink evaporated the "dampenedness" of the unheated anodized metals and startled - stifled - your nostrils.
  • Because the MOSFET power that's driving into the Bipolar mess of old, is a different dynamic (SIC) than many are used to - so it is a learning curve.
You Tube and suggestions thereof, in some eyes, are worse than the cure of starting all over and rework a newer design, may tweak just a ferrite or two, and (perhaps) a longer tube (or shorter) to make the output meet the "curve" to make the combiners do a better job - some vids just "replace" and that's' it - others are more honest - best to review the work others do and work accordingly.

Take the best from the Rest and make yours work like you want it to.

I hate to have to say it that way, but perhaps the "When in Rome..." idiom seems to be more of the norm...

Running my CB400HD(4XHG2879s) with my 979 now. Radio does about 20 watts pep max. I'm running it at around 3/4 power. I'm happy. Great reports and sounds crystal clear. Bought the 400 but was looking for an 8"pill" but new to the custom built amp so wanted to see how it goes first with something smaller, and going to try a friends old sweet 16 in the mean time and see how it works with my jeep as that is a concern as well.
