TEXAS PINEYWOODS
I just got one of these off ebay with a turner road king 56 and an external speaker for 50 bucks shipped. radio is in good condition and everything works. I looked inside and only thing that could have been done is tweeking of the am mod. pot. radio is currently dk4 swinging 15 on am and 16pep on ssb. all the tx coils are untouched and I am assuming the mod limiter is intact, I saw nothing clipped. Reckon I can get her tuned up a little more, and would it be worth it?? btw, I know I am gonna unlock the clarifier for sure. what do ya'll think of this little radio??

leave it as is...
it is showing good numbers..
no need to push your luck and in do so creat a dirty signal

the clarifier is a seperate issue ofcourse

If your getting 14-16 watts from it thats about what they do. I don't know what this super duper mod thing is or why they always have to have a funky name for it. A variable dead key mod would be useful and it's actually very simple with that radio.

butcher, thats what we call a supermod. its just a variable power with full swing from either setting. I am not complaining about the numbers, they are pretty good from that little radio, just would like a lower dk on am for the amp.

Except for the maybe the Clarifier, I'd leave it as it is. This little rig is GREAT out-of-the-box.

should do about 20/20 pep on both AM/SSB (then again whats the meter all about ?) 15AM/16SSB sound about right in the ballpark , NPC mod or super dupper swing kit mod on it will work fine (whatever you want to call it) if you had a scope and the radio can be sett for 100% modulation I think your numbers would look just about right. Your mod will take the audio off the scope !! Hey !! it's all good (-: but then again there already loud out of the box with a decent power mic . Do the swing thing and the RK-56 will be all it needs !! 50 bucks on Ebay for both ? !! I'd say it was your lucky day Tex !!

Personally , if your going to run a box with it ? I'd just take it down to 2 watt DK or whatever it is your box likes and leave it at that at 100% which would give you about a 8 watt swing if that !! Why ? because the the audio chip and voltage regulator share the same heat sink in that radio and for some reason or other they get hotter then hell !! With that perticular radio , I would just let the amp take care of business , This will surely give you all you would really need without beating up those items and making them even hotter then they already get in a decent little 20 year old radio. Just a suggestion.

One of my favorite radios... check out cb tricks.. I believe they posted Handy Andys mods for that chassis... he had some really goods stuff for that radio...definatly got some good swing/low carrier out of it.
Its worth checking out... you will keep all the swing (15 to 20 watts) but be able to adjust the carrier to whatever you want down to about 1 watt.

I did it to my pc 122 about3 or 4 years ago and even did it to a midland 6001 and a few other similar chassis.

Good point.... it is a very HOT running radio.. after doing that NPC/volt mod to the radio it actually ran alot cooler... BUT regarless I did add a small heat sink on the side of the radio (audio ic/ reg) and at the back (finals) to deal with the heat.
Heat sink helped... but then again I was really pushing the radio hard

surely a memoriable radio for me , I think you sent me some info on that radio BW ? used one for many years in the earlier 90s (think I even posted a picture of my old trusty PC-122 in another thread a while back) after so many other radios there after concerning SSB radios , there were surely better receiving radios out there in my opinion , but no matter what ,The PC-122 held it's own without a doubt in my mind. For anyone that is new to this radio and has had other AM/SSB radios in there time , I think when it comes to receive on the PC-122s , I think then you might have an idea about what IM talking about. (but then again , maybe it was just me ?) but out of the 3 or 4 that I had over the years , they all pretty much did the same thing, but they surely get the thumbs up no matter what from me. (-: Peace

thanks for all the help guys. over the last couple days I have talked on ssb, seems to be right on freq. so I dont know if I am gonna get the clarifier unlocked or not, still will eventually I imagine. I am gonna go check out cbtricks for the tune up on this radio.

pc 122xl/drift

I have one of those radios, and I have a drift on ssb not much but enough after talking 10 minutes or so they notice it. I noticed someone said how hot it gets and heating up the components could cause this drift<I am not a tech>, so I put a small fan under it feeding into the spkr holes<I dont see any other way>, but noticed the radio cabinet has cooled off somewhat, but havent talked long on ssb to see the problem again or to see if the cooling effect has helped.

Does one believe this could help????

doctor
