IC 718 Modifications ALC

Its been around waaaaay longer than that. Im really surprised icom hasn't discontinued it already, amazing. Ps the yaesu ft-891 will eat that radio alive for about the same price

There are trade-offs. Read the IC-718 catalog description.

$560 at DX-E.
FR-891 $610

These aren’t $1,900 radios.
Get one of each to suit.

Ya it will eat it for lunch, or have you crash in the car in front you you while trying to change settings on a 90% menu driven radio. Wait what? How is it I switch to lower SSB buried deep in this menu?
Bang.... just slammed into a family of 4....

No wonder that sorry excuse for a radio (ft-891) sells for $600, Its a freaking ipad with finals and a microphone.

I never got that to work to produce Positive modulation.

It seems where ever you set the carrier power, and the Audio level, the radio still downward modulates the carrier when audio is applied.

I have had the same IC-718 since 2002... great basic rig, use to run one Mobile too... before my old truck got totaled... the newer truck doesn't have the room in it

It all depends on what your requirements are, I wouldn't give a dime for 891, too small, the screen is too small, too much can fail on it. The 718 is a single purpose radio, it dies you loose HF, the 891 dies you loose everything. The 718 is larger, the screen is larger, there is less to fail.
