I had been using my IC-746 on 146.520 earlier and returned to the shack to switch it to 40m. I did, but there was too much white noise and Spanish music bleeding into the band. I decided to check 80m, too, and pressed the button for the band.
The radio began suddenly to start clicking rapidly and the display started flashing, too. The radio does not respond to the power off button, so I quickly unplug it.
I checked the power supply voltage which checked out fine. Same supply I've had on it for 3 years.
Reapplying power gets same results.
Anyone have any idea what's up with it?

Ouch. - My favorite all-time radio btw. I've had several in the past and wish I kept the last one. Want to get another.
Sorry - have no idea what the problem may be. They are getting old at around 25 years and you may have developed a glitch in the main processor. Check the manual and see if there's a Master Reset procedure. Try that. Good luck !!

There is a master reset.
I can not get it to turn off when plugged back in to do the reset. It is done when powering back up from off.
Thanks.

I tried that.
Now, after everything unplugged all night, and with the tech on the way over to pick it up, I plugged it in. Everything it working. Got all bands up. Tested AM on 27.285 with contact to and from arkansas/Illinois.
Tested LSB on 40m with multiple net checking contacts with good results.
I think the cooling fan died on my PS and it was over heated. Going to switch out PS, and put a bigger fan on the current one then watch it awhile.
Thanks.
If anyone has any other ideas share them.
Other than a little uBitx, which is 160-10m SSB only, this is my only HF/6m/2m all mode rig.

After a similar issue with 2 different brands of "switcher's", both good brands. I took mine off the bench got rid of the questionable ones and went back to Astron Linear supplies. Plus NO fans to listen to ALL the time...except when the amps are on...:ROFLMAO:
