Roger beep

You could always use a Cobra 19DXII - those things used a "Vertical card" VCO and with the changes in SMD from discrete, the radio "poiked" on key up and "squeaked" on un-key you can hear it in the signal. Annoying to other operators because of the noise was the "Ramp" to switch the offset 455kHz from RX to TX then back again.

Never had a radio quite like that one before...

The only reason I brought that up was in SSB modes, those "electric Lollypops" (D104's) had that distinct "Crunch" to their key and un key - so the beep - to me - was a pointless add-on that only triggered others to return the favor.

So if people, especially hams, are so irritated by "roger beeps", then why does just about every repeater have a "courtesy tone"? Serves the same purpose. And the tones the Motorola's make on unkey? There's other worse things in life to get your panties in a bunch over.

As a respected ham it is my duty to get over the top upset about roger beeps and echo... well not really but I do find the beep annoying (yes on the repeaters as well). I blame NASA for this.

Quindar tones were used to remotely key and unkey transmitters in NASA's ground control network. So they served a legitimate purpose.

Roger beeps, on the other hand, are useful for letting the whole world know you like to beep off.

I do not have a Roger-Beep module or feature on any of my radios. I would use a Roger-Beep only for SSB DX-ing anyway, and I do not use SSB much, so no loss for me.

Courtesy tones actually serve a purpose. Since the carrier on a repeater has a looooong hang-time it may not be apparent when someone unkeys if they are full quieting into the repeater. If you can't hear when someone on SSB stops talking it is past time to end the conversation. Big difference.

Coming north into Pennsylvania on IH81 a few weeks back we had us short-arm inspection on AM-19 as we crossed under another major road.
Well, . . a Rodger Bip sound-off. Buttons got pushed and dials got turned. The full panoply of Voice Changers with Echo + Delay devices also on display.

(This was funny as hell. Lasted maybe three minutes).

The echo-ing Rodger Bip was the winner.

Courtesy Tone & Roger Beeps are two different Animals. It's a matter of opinion & that's mine.Talk on Amateur Radio with a Roger Beep & you will be talking to yourself pretty quickly & that's the way it should be with Noise Toys of all kinds on the CB & it pretty much is around here & has been for many years.People will just ignore you.
