If you ever put a 718 on an O'scope...

I have never been able to set one up (I have 2 of them) so that it doesn't Downward Modulate...

40 Carrier (RF Power on HIGH), 100% downward Modulation.
25 Watt Carrier: 100% Downward Modulation
1W carrier: Downward Modulation...

I have never been able to get one to gain PEP on Modulation above the Carrier Set level...

Don't claim to be an expert can only post my personal experiences with the 718.
After many long sessions with some of my locals helping these are the results.
On Am carrier set to 10-15 watts no higher allows plenty of headroom for the audio
I repeat audio not SWING.
Mic gain at 10-15 with processor on, hold mic about 3" away and speak in a normal
conversational level as if you were talking to someone in the room with you.
Don't eat the mic and don't try to make it swing like a cb .
Talk across the mic not directly into it you should have clear and adequately loud
modulation.
I have run my 718 on AM this way for a lot of years & have had acceptable results.
As far as the ALC issue a short jumper wire between two resistors cures that issue.
It is a tight spot on the board to work but if you feel you can do it it works.
Check out mods.dk for the mod.
Hope this helps, had the 718 for a lot of years and still think it is a great little radio.

But have you ever put it on an O'Scope and seen the modulation envelope? I've never gotten envelope growth/Positive modulation.

I have tried the ALC mod Shadetree posted, didn't work...

And I don't care about "Swing"...

anyone have a suggestion as to how to use this rig on 11 meter?the audio is constantly clipping---its also a ham radio---i use it from time to time--but only a spare----some say open the mic pot wide open to counter act the alc-but not sure,
Probably one of saddest icoms ive owned. And certainly not ok for am. Harsh noisy rx. 706mk2g, ts440, ts450, just say no to the 718.
