Quick Texas Star ?

Had a little ts 250 no variable did a dad gum good job until I got greedy with power and KAbooom! But was awesome for what I been doing. Now I’m runnin barefoot until I find something else . But I hear the 500 is a monster but never owned one.

My buddy has a little 250. Works well and sounds good. He loves it.

I have 6 Texas Star DX 500V amplifiers.
They all came with DEI transistors in them. Most did not perform very well.
I put genuine Toshiba 2SC2879 transistors in all of them back when genuine Toshiba's could still be had for $65.00 (3~5 years ago).
I would be hard pressed to let any of them go because of the Toshiba's .......

I found a deal on one that I will try. If it doesn't work well with my system I'll sell it. BUT, I may just find a tech to put some 1446s in it.

I sent them a message, Are they originals or counterfeits? :D
Fake Fake Fake.
Now with that said some say the fakes are built better than hg or dei. My issue is matching these fakes. I wouldn't trust matching these by just the lot code like one could do with real Toshibas. Id be asking what the hfe gain is on these individual lots theyre selling and hopefully match them that way and then id have to re-test them after i received them to make sure.
Im replacing the dei pills in a sweet 16 with hfe matched hg 2879C (150w) series pills i ordered direct from HG Semiconductor. They were prompt, easy to work with and i paid thru paypal. I filled out their online order form and they contacted me within a day or two. Prices were about $5 less per pill than ebay or other us vendors. My order was rather large at 20 pieces and fedx shipping was free. Im not sure if shipping is free on smaller orders.

I'll answer that question on the 2879's in that Ebay listing.... they are guaranteed fake. Don't buy them. They will not tell you the truth, either. They will lie and say they are the real deal, but they are not.

Here's a video I just made that exposes and addresses the fakes, using the exact ad that was posted a few posts above mine. Be careful and do your research!

~Cheers~

Yes sir, I had also noticed that same difference quite some time ago ......

Absolutely they are knockoffs.
You are not going to find genuine Toshiba 2SC2879 transistors, except from someone who has built up a personal stock of them (such as myself, I have over 80 of them).
I built up my stock over a period of about 4~5 years, all genuine, original Toshiba.
I have examined the internals of many 2879's, same as BBI ......
None compare to the originals.
The ASI's I mentioned in another post, and the knockoff Toshiba's " 6J " date code, are the only two I have found that come closest.......
The HG's work well, but the quality of the manufacturing is very lacking. The tabs are not connected internally very well, and the ceramic covers, top and bottom, are much thinner, thus also more brittle and break easily.

Right now the only real choice is HG. Some folks have reported issues with hg but i believe most were treating them like Toshibas and/or had a vswr over 1.3. My neighbor has been running a gatekeeper built 1600dx with regular hg 2879's for the last year and hasnt had any issues. He was told to keep hos vswr under 1.3 always. 30w in makes 800 pep all day long. Gotta follow some new rules with these pills.
The fakes are unreliable in manufacturing.

Yes, I agree.
The quality of manufacture of the HG's are lacking, but they do perform okay.
As said above, Right now the only real choice is HG.
Or take your chances with knockoffs, which I don't care for.

Well, my amp is here and got it "kinda" wired in. Looks like a 6 year old did it, but I'll fix it when I get new electrical connectors.

Anywhoooo...the box is stamped DEI right on it so apparently you have a choice. Maybe HG? But, I can't key in on AM cuz my radio is much too hot, but on SSB and driving 20W pep I'm getting about 450+ @ 85% modulation. Now, this is a Radio Shack meter so I'm not sure if it's a true peak reading meter or not. The switch says average and pep, although it does not jive with my radio meter so, I dunno. Haven't received any audio reports as of yet. No conditions. Anyhow, it's a solid looking amp, nothing rolling around inside and makes the meter go WOOO WOOOOO
