FURTHEST LOCAL NON-DX CONTACT?

Best non-DX for me would be about 80-85 miles. We used to have a round table in the evenings and it seemed as if I was in the middle of the group. Everyone was about about 50-90 miles from me. Made spinning the beam a PITA sometimes but without it I wasn't able to work those stations due to terrain.

I'd be lucky to pass the novice test. There are people like myself at least I think so that are just not first and the theory of the type of electronics test they give for the general ticket. I truly believe that no matter how much I study I just won't be able to pass it. And in all honesty happy on 11 meters. Would I like to have a choice of operating on other bands? Yes! What I like it enough to keep going back? That I don't know. I would have to do it first, and that's just not likely.
There is no Novice class any more. Technician, General, and Extra. There is no Morse code requirement.

Furthest local non-DX contact on CB about 60 miles with 4W. Was on a hill and both of us were mobile.

On a CB.....
4155 miles from UK to Hyderabad in India using just 20W from a President Lincoln.

On amateur radio.....
18,000 miles longpath from UK to China with 100W on 10m
6500 miles from UK to Argentina with 1W, yes ONE WATT, on 17m band.

Never used 500W, there's no need.

Thanks Gary ! But if you can't pass that test .... Yup just lazy like me ! Not an on-line test I haven't passed , 3 years of Electronics in HS ( what I still remember ) & just basic common sense . W/ me it's the upgrade , really want that Icom 7300 but just can't justify that purchase @ this time . Local ham groups here are very " Clicky " . As far as Dx , lately Iv'e been talking it daily , but just USA . That kind of gets to be a PIA . I had them all day in my radio yesterday on 21 am, trying to chat local . Yup ! I heard you ! Gave you my #'s now leave me alone . I have locals to chat with . I finally turned my amp off ! :ROFLMAO: Stay healthy & Safe ! 73 & God Bless ! Leo

My local 38 lsb community talks with Mike On The Mic at 112 miles town to town. Mike is at the top of a 3000 foot mountain in western Maryland and we are in and around Westminster Maryland. I have also spoken to someone in Ocean City Maryland at 123 miles. I know he was using a Moonraker IV pointing my way. I am typically running my mint Teaberry Stalker XV (11 watts SSB) pushing a Palomar 225 (about 150 PEP). I run a Turner +3b and an Imax 2000. I have also spoken to a gentleman in Edinburg Va. a few times and he is about 104 miles away. His signal is low as expected but on a quiet day we can chat.

Ol' Magnum still wants that Dave Made W/ Ps , that does over 4500 watts .. Guy whats to sell out , but he's Double Clutching on Me ! I got the $$ he can't make up his mind . I need a change from my Little 2 pill !;) Stay Healthy & Safe ! 73 & God Bless ! Leo

For me, it was a Cobra 148 on AM only, on channel 19, no amp and into a 102 whip. Talked to a truck driver 14 miles. May not sound like much until you consider he was probably running some short 4 foot antennas. And there was some terrain between us.

You were also mobile?

Amp or no amp, the other guy sure leaves a lot to be desired at times (ha)

About 104 air miles, Cupertino Ca to Cathey's Valley Ca.
Used to do that on a regular basis.
Robb was running a Flex radio and ( if I remember right) a 3 el beam. I was mobile with a 2950 dx and a Texas star 500@ about 320 watts.
Antennas 96" Francis, or a 27 Inch long shaft 10k coil.

Uncannily, this was always a workday evening after leaving the local watering hole to finish the trip home.

As, . . ever since that long-ago “workshop” at Big Sur,

Words, are but a form.
Radio, but a spiritual approximation.
Potential, arises from within me.

(“Happy Hour”, the more effective starting point).

With a Uniden Madison, Silver Eagle, IMAX 2000 (8ft off the ground,) and 500 (pep) watts i made SSB contact on several occasions with a mobile (Gary) in Staten Island New York. That's approximately 70 miles from my QTH In Southern New Jerseys Pine Barrens.

With a Sonar 2340, non amplified high Z d104, Demco modulator and and 500 (pep) watts (iMAX 2000 8' off the ground) on AM i made contact with Oley Pennsylvania. Approximately 80 miles from my QTH.

What does your station consist of, and what's your furthest point to point
SSB/AM contact?
No cheating! LOL 73's
PS. If possible please add a picture of your setup.

Sonar height is might, you need to get that antenna 3-5 times higher minimum. You could talk the same distance probably on 30 watts. Your neighbors will love you too since you won't be blasting 500 watts through their homes and getting into everything. Not to mention your receive will greatly improve the higher you go.
