Any tips on load an amp with the FT-891?

Lots of ways to do it - you hit on one. Some people do it on CW with a tone, others use AM or RTTY. However you do it, keep the power low while tuning up.

It's just a pain. Each mode has it's own power adjustment in the menu. I have to throw a carrier, then match that setting in SSB. Never had a radio like that.

For those unfamiliar with the 891, each mode has its own power adjustment menu. When I tune in FM. It's power level is adjusted until the amp is tuned. When I switch to SSB, I have to ensure it's power level is the same or less. AM also has its own adjustment.

Once I know where the load control goes for each band I don't do the full throttle tune up....unless the shack is cold. If you know the load setting you can peak the plate tuning at reduced drive.

For each bandd i know where the Plate and Load settings should be on the SB 1000 so just a small AM carrier and quick reset of them and I'm done tune with power and be done.
Then reduce power to the output wished.
Mostly just runing 600 to 700 watts out from the old rebuild amp.

just inject a tone into it while in SSB mode.

I use MMSSTV for my tone generator.

Then you will also be set up for any digital mode programs too.

I was thinking of doing it that way. I have a tone generator app on my phone. I wish Yaesu wouldn't have abandonedthis radio. Most owners thought Yaesu was going going to fix this rigs quirk years ago. I suppose that's why this rig is so cheap, since they've abandoned any FW upgrades.

It's still a damn good rig, though. It also helps that the ACOM is a led to be tuned quickly.

Yeah, this rig does have some "quirks" as compared to other rigs, but, after all, it was intended for mobile usage and after a few menu settings, it is easy to use

Yeah, great mobile. It's a nice base, too. I figured they'd at least make the mode and band selection time a little longer. Gotta be Quick Draw McGraw.
