Have one a them radios still boxed from shipping . . and am almighty intimidated by a 21-page, close-print “cheat sheet”.

Ha!

(Let me recommend that there are both written and Utube reviews to allay those anxieties. Or, still another beer).

A Yaesu ft450d — and Icom-718 —were the ones caught my interest (fit my budget; and could be portable/mobile). The former is being discontinued, so deals on brand-new may show up (better than the good deals already present).

The latter has also been on sale recently, and is said to be user-intuitive.

Your approach to what you want is from two directions. Today’s form of ignorance versus tomorrow’s more knowledgeable man.

Older HF rigs can be a bargain. Just remember they are old and expect to have occasional issues. If you can fix it that's great. If you can't you will be spending more money.

The kenwood ts440 is a good rig but they have issues. I have one that has the dots below 15 meters. The conductive glue was removed from the vco years ago and they're back again. I haven't made time to dig into it.

The factory 455 filter in the Kenmore really sucks. It limits both rx and tx bandwidth too much to make good AM. I believe it was a 2.4k filter. The 3k filter from a cheap CB radio is an improvement.

Well I'm looking at the Icoms or the Yeasu I prefer a base style chassis not mobile But Ill take what the best deal gives me at this point....I Really would like the FT3000 Yeasu a friend has it, it is too kool and too much, so today my mission is research Im not buying any exports thanks for the input on that, and I need to get my behind in gear and get the license Ive been slacking on that........do to fixing 2 cb's and 2 Exports and actually after 20 years I fixed the Cobra 148GTL I have since 1998 with the Modulation problem.......... Have patience with me, Im learning a lot

Between the two you mentioned I’d get the Stryker 955 but if you’re going to get your amateur ticket I would take a look at the Icom 718 for another choice you can get them for around $600 with the factory rebate.
