For those who want to check signals on 11 meters / 27 MHz, I have several KiwiSDR receivers online, and open for free public use. The best one for 11 meters (and the higher bands in general) is this one:

It has a 58 ft T2FD antenna, and the QTH is Westminster, MD USA. My grid location is FM19mq

I also have these other two KiwiSDR available:

Obviously conditions are not great right now, between the low solar activity and current geomagnetic storms, but eventually they will improve.

I've thought about setting up a web sdr here but don't know where to start or what's needed. Is there a web sdr for dummies book?

KiwiSDRs are fairly straightforward to set up, they have a build in CPU that does everything for you, you don't need to install drivers or software on your computer. You access it via your web browser.

Plug it in, set a few configuration settings, and you're done. Instructions come with it for doing this.

You can share your KiwiSDR to the outside world, as we do, by enabling access to it via some changes to your router configuration. These settings vary based on your specific router, but not too difficult, someone will likely be able to help you if you run into any issues.

The KiwiSDRs are probably the easiest to set up. A large number of the current receivers online do not have great antenna systems on them (although this is slowly changing). If you have the ability to attach an online receiver to a good antenna in a good location then that would be a great resource.

That webpage has a lot of details shown for clarity but it isn't as hard as it looks to set up. Some KiwiSDR owners will offer to host your receiver at their location. Typically, you will get a password protected user slot or two for your own use and the other slots will get publicly shared.

Not to many for 11m though. Theres one in DC, one in idaho, one in crooked ranch oregon and one in newport oregon. Thats the only online sdrs i could find that will go to 11m.

KiwiSDR receivers cover 11m, although as Rob_MA noted antenna/RFI levels on some are sketchy at best.

Of my three public KiwiSDRs, this one does best on 11m:

In fact I am listening to 11m right now, seems to be all locals without any skip atm.

For your wintertime listening pleasure, the session timeouts and maximum daily times on my KiwiSDRs have been increased.

  • On receivers 1, 2, and 3 there is a 3 hour per session timeout and a 10 hour per day maximum per person.
  • On receiver 4 there is a 6 hour per session timeout and a 18 hour per day maximum per person.

Timeouts are instituted to make sure that inactive sessions don't tie up a receiver and prevent others from using it. If your session times out you can reconnect up to the daily maximum.
