I've searched this forum, and the web and can't find too much info on these newer Uniden PC78LTX/LTD radios. These are the radios that use the surface mount boards on them. Quite a bit different then their older counterparts. I'm looking for tune up/mod info on these units. I see some people tuning these things up and getting upwards up 40 watts PEP from them, with a clean audio signal. Thanks in advance.

I shot some pics of one of these last week. Was gonna post them, but didn't get enough 'round tuits'.

There are two transmit adjustments. One trimpot for the modulation limiter. And one slug-tuned coil in the output of the final transistor.

And that's it.

The radio is all surface mount, so the potential for mods is limited by that.

I'll get on that.

i'm interested in this one too. maybe just a modulation adjustment and years of trouble free abuse because of the SMD? or just harder to repair? I've been looking into trying one of these. They certainly are cheap enough to buy.

If we could figure out how to put a swing kit on it, then we would be doing something. Something like the JP36 mod for the Cobra 29. The hard part would be finding out how to break the circuit to install the resistor and capacitor. With. Cobra 29, just remove JP36 and put it there.

Edit: looks like JV101 might be the jumper to use if it is in the new version.

The most you will be able to do is adjust the dead key and modulation level. With surface mount and no service manual anything else probably won't be happening. Historically Uniden has built some of the best ever cb radio's. I don't know much about the newer stuff, the 980 seemed to be a decent SSB radio and the 880 was a good talker for it's size.

There's my take (write up) to it's "Brother" here...

On a further note, the PC88 - is similar to the TRC-447 that came out back in the late 90's but used SMD of 040 size, A little bigger but still plenty of room and back then they used (kept) the coil coupled stage design and the WX function - all in a single controller. PLL is a Serial programmable type.
