Hiya

I’m gonna start studying for my HAM tech license and would like to hear your thoughts on options for gear in my car.

I have a Jeep Wrangler (4 door) and space is tight! No real preference on make / model (since I don’t know jack yet). I thought some of the Yaesu or Icom products looked like good ideas , since the main body is separate from the touch screen. But what do I know ???

what would you put in your Jeep if you were a newbie? What about antenna setup?

1). First suggestion is to search out every thread on this site using a multiple of search terms re the Wrangler.

2). Same over on QRZ

4). See also RadioRefetence

5) Jeep-specific forums.

3). The Bible of Mobile Install:

www.K0BG.com

4). Determining how you’ll use it (only when stationary? remote antenna?) will be helped by the above. What problems others have run into (maybe, solved).

The Wrangler is difficult for an antenna mount that works well.

Not impossible. Much of that depends on the gear and operating modes chosen.

I have a '99 Jeep Wrangler that I bought new and now has 230K miles on it. What an awesome ride....

I have an Icom IC-7000 in it with a Uniden CB. An Ameritron ALS-500 supplies the oomph on the ham bands. My buddy has the latest model Jeep Wrangler 4 door model and I've looked it over pretty carefully to see what a radio install might look like.

It would be pretty easy to fit a 2m/440 mobile rig in there somewhere. I'd probably think about putting the body under a seat and use a seat bolt mount for the face. That should be pretty easy to install.
