Mobile Mobile antenna recommendation for 88-98 reg can Chevy truck

View attachment 36825 View attachment 36826

I already got her big three’d up lol, all the battery and alternator wires have been upgraded.

The pictures don’t do it justice, the wires are much better than stock
Wiring looks good, I would be tempted to use the top post terminals for some of the connections. I like using the big Zinc military style battery post clamps. I think Greenlee makes a fine tooth hole saw that might work good for the antenna hole.

Couldn’t agree more. That’s the first thing I thought when I saw it...those top posts begging to be used.

The plan originally was to use the top posts, I swapped all the wiring in one afternoon. I thought I already had some top post battery lugs, (the cheap lead ones) in my tool box junk drawer all I had was side post battery extended things. I still haven’t gotten around to it yet.

It looks good and I’m sure will work fine, Red. Just like I said, “begging” to be used. Lol.

What are you planning to run?

Well I did the big three upgrade, including upgrading a couple of the ground wires about three years ago, then about a month ago I put one 10” subwoofer in a ported truck style box behind the seat, and a 1500 watt power acoustic mono block amp.

I never really intended to put any car audio stuff in this truck but a coworker who’s really into car audio, sold me the stuff for cheap.

Now my real plans for my cb set up are, to put my uniden 980 in the truck and run it barefoot for the time being. But i might also throw my radio shack htx10 in there too, I like working 10 meters mobile. Whichever antenna I do get, I would like to be able to use it on 10 and 11. I might end up putting an amp in there also, but I don’t have any plans to for now.

Good deal. You should be well-equipped to run anything on the agenda. Good luck with your antenna choice. I’m sure you’ll find something that you’re happy with.

With a relatively low profile antenna and an older truck, it really doesn't matter much. I have never installed a roof mount that had enough room for an so239 and a 90, so I have only used lug mounts. I'd go budget and spend the extra on something else.

Your right, I think I should use one that has the lug mounts. I want to be able to put my headliner back up, I don’t think an so239 with a 90 will clear.

It actually doesn’t work as bad as I thought it would. I’m able to talk to a guy about 20 miles away barefoot just sitting in my drive way. I don’t ever plan on running any power through it. I don’t even own an amplifier. If ten meters ever starts to really open up good I might put my radio shack htx-10 in the truck.

Hood mount will get you across the highway.

A whole other question from Up & Down the road.

Stationary, RX/TX to a base station,
isn't mobile operation in some important respects.

A mag mount on the roof is a superior position. Get the PL-145 mount.

.

Well I started messing with the antenna, I probably trimmed 2 inches off the steel whip 1/4” at a time thinking I could get good swr from ch38 to the tech phone part of 10meters. This thing seems to have very narrow bandwidth.

When I started out I had an swr of 1.6 on 40 and like 1.5 on 1. Now the lowest I can get anywhere, after trimming and messing with the tuning rings for like 3 hours is 1.3 on 26.335,

I would think that trimming the whip would be getting me better swr higher in frequency.
