Mobile Wilson 1000 barjan junk now?

I heard that you may need to mod the new Barjan made Wilson 1000/5000 antennas by opening up the base? and re-soldering the coax connections due to the poor manufacturing technique used. (Maybe he meant where the coax connects on the bottom) Then make sure you seal it up with a non-conductive water sealant real well.

I was told that the main whip and internal loading coils are the same heavy duty size as the old ones, they are just not soldered/ crimped well in the Barjan units. Also apparently, they may not sealed as well as the old ones. If water gets in, it can arc out and or short/ open then not work properly. Both issues are easily remedied if your mechanically, electronically inclined I would presume.

Personally, I only have the older Wilson's and have never had one apart.

solder points seem to become the weak point of antennas that use them . never had a short on a home brew antenna using compression , but nothing last forever .

I kind of like my copper and stainless steel compression joints. I haven't had one fail yet. Then again the marine-grade shrink tubing makes a nice waterproof seal to keep moisture out.

having options is cool . but , for the splitting hair club , different metals brings up electrolysis on antennas . nothing that can't be worked around but it can be a problem without precautions .

I just bought a wilson 1000 I thought was NOS from the good ol days

I mounted the new wilson 1000 on my crown vic and it tuned for 28.3.
I have a wilson 5000 coil here from my buddies car that he stupidly sold without removing the roof mount for it.
I had to shorten the whip a couple inches when we tuned it so I brought it along with me thinking I'd use the already shortened whip and that way I wouldn't have to cut the new whip.

Well like I said it tuned for 28.3 so I put the longer whip that came with the antenna that wasn't cut and it tuned 27.980.
I was like WTF!! so I put the willy 5000 coil on with the shortened whip and it was bang on where we had it before, I did a quick touch up to get it flat from channel 28 to .555.

So this seller knew these were f***ing junk and tricked people with the MADE IN USA coax picture



So I paid $150 for a piece of crap.

Me too 357, and I agree...it did better than my K40 and it wasn't even close. I did like the removable radiator part however.

Not sure if this is the old wilson 5000 or not but I picked this up used last summer with a bunch of 102" whips and heard something rattling around so I opened up and found glue pieces and scrapped a fair amount of glue off the coil?? the solder joints look ok to me, just a little rust on the top nut, will replace with new one and wire brush to clean threads. Will seal it back up and try it out on my f150. Very easy to open btw, heat gun and tap stud with hammer and Bobs your uncle. Just to mention the top nut needed to be tightened as I could move the coil a wee bit. This seems to be an older one from comparison to the one posted above cut open, one looks to have less # coils vs the one I cracked open.
