New SSB export radio coming soon - RCI X9

If this radio sucks I will be the first to admit it..
I'll bet if you run the 120 watt radio at about 100 watts, rather than trying to get 200 out of it like some, you'll be pleased with the radio. It seems like the finals are the weak link and knowing this, makes me wonder what the temptation is, to extract every last watt? Turn it down 20 or 30 watts to improve reliability. Not up another 70. I also appreciate your willingness to be honest about your results.

Slowmover did you not like the Walcott tune?

Not on the 979. Don’t recall what Clay didn’t like (that’s an open wallet shop for me; leave nothing undone), but his align/tune is about longevity. Walcott had it cranked I’d imagine. I didn’t test. Short procedure, not full alignment.

IIRC, 2NC995 got 1-2 Linc 2 from Walcott and expressed things as fine.

If that makes you feel iffy, one of the boys around here might set you up per your concerns.

This has been an informative thread.

my g90 swings backward RMS on am :(
That is most likely due to the ALC setting. The power amp is well capable of producing 20 watts PEP but, the ALC may be making that less possible on AM. That's because 20 watts PEP looks like more power to the ALC circuit, once it's on top of a 5 watt carrier, which causes the average power to increase. AM performs better with stronger positive peaks once the ALC is backed off a little. If your HF rig has less peak power on AM than SSB, look at the ALC level first.

I just worked on one yesterday. New out of the box, plugged it in and it blew a 30 amp fuse. Turns it the wiring harness was wired incorrectly! 12 gage wire is separated in 3 sections for + & - . Someone at the factory put red tubing on the negative and black on the positive 12 gauge wire at the Molex connector. So some genius wired it in reverse into the Molex connector. Poof. Have to post a picture. FYI it borrows the same 4 mosfet board from the 2995DX CF.
not surprised. EVERY Consumer Electronics (Galaxy/Ranger/Texas Star etc) I have ordered direct from a retailer, I have had to re-work. Now, if I want one, I buy one from a shop that has at least had someone verify it powers up (tunes it) before it is shipped to me. Then I may re-tune it if it is crazy high power.

Why would you want to use a G90 on AM anyway?
Its' forte is SSB.
