(Mobile) Lincoln II +

Am glad I was able to run this radio when AM-19 was flat alive with driver concerns due to winter ice storm. Heard a little of everything and everybody. All types.

Now, the normal (slow) interludes of a conversation here and there.

The audio quality of voices is high enough I wouldn’t willingly give it up.

It will have been a month on the road till my planned get-home arrives.

A tilt/swivel mount for the radio, new coax, power, etc, to go in once I get there. Plus some odds & ends from the spares box.

Radio is good enough (saying this again) that the rest of the systems need to be at their best.

Otherwise I’d stick with one of my10-M Galaxy radios for ALL DAY listening.

I’d chance not hearing some drivers audibly well versus turning off a “noisy” radio. Which would happen.

My radio experience is as a driver. Am dependent on timely information. Accuracy of such is up to me: Verify.

Hear, and get heard . . . I’m serious about that set of parameters on AM-19. (50-150W + DSP my current recommendation; big truck antenna + mount the difficulty to overcome with both mine and the other guys rig. In other words, I have to carry both ends).

SSB is (will be) the “test” of Receive & Transmit. Things get dicy on the road — a general degradation — I want that mode to function as well as can be while moving. Getting home is what matters. Distant reports thus matter.

The speed at which one travels (35-mph or 65-mph) doesn’t change the equation of time and distance. An accurate assessment of greater risk is down to seconds in some, even most, cases.

The example is in being able to access a “good” alternative route. The exit to such may be (relatively) far from the problem. There may be none inside 3-4/miles.

One minute on a paved roadway —a highway mile or a suburban half-mile — could be a pretty serious set of seconds if the wrong decision ends in being on foot. A stopped road ends travel where one is among other fish in a barrel.

Vehicle Separation Distance is the key heading in traffic safety. All-encompassing.

• Criticize truck drivers all day, but no other identifiable group has hive-mind access or is as alert to problems or their potential.

I don’t have either the Ranger or Anytone, but don’t feel I’m missing anything per reviews and descriptions.

The Lincoln II+ has been as good as described, and I already owned the key to “noisy receive”.

If you find other operators both mobile and 10-12/hrs daily use this will put my comments into perspective.

I don’t shut off the radio because the local turd-breath is being aggravating.

I’d imagine any of the three will suffice.

— The Ranger is “big” in size
— The Anytone has no factory support.

Was home this past weekend and got to working on new power (6-AWG versus 10/2 Duplex previously) and had one terrifically frustrating pair of days with high SWR. COULDN’T crack it.

So back in went the starboard door frame SS Spot Mirror Mount (Bobs CB) and a Wilson beehive sporting a 5’ Skipshooter.

Used the U980 to track & correct high SWR with this and am now at about 1.5:1. Left the new KL7405v at home and reinstalled the KL-203.

Main engine at idle I show 14.2V with silent PTT (amp on or off).

Have PALOMAR ENGINEERS Line Isolator at feedpoint and coax filter at transceiver. Amp and Bandpass filters as before.

Without question I lose some signals prematurely as the trailer blocks them. A 6’ Skipshooter is on the list.

Even with those external changes this radio shines nicely. Haven’t traveled far due to a shipper load problem, but I’ve started to read the manual and make a few changes, such as the suggested 15/2 Echo/Delay setting.

I’ll try the A636L mic I had converted for the U980 again, and will toy with the Skipshooter nail to see if SWR won’t come down a little. Etc.

Tuesday & Wednesday the two worst radio days I’ve ever had. Just wasn’t going to give up.

Now, with three (3) filters in line I’d say that the “noise” has lost its crackling edge and is simply smoother. Easier to ignore. I’m “later” in going to noise controls, also. (This is a win).

I’d never pass contributor Eldorado-828 inspection as of today (squared away truck cab), but I’m real glad nothing got damaged in a permanent way (think the cophase harness got graunched). But what you see works pretty nicely.

I’ve sat all day just across the river from Vicksburg and have left only the Hi-Cut filter turned on the past 16-hours. Very little to hear. But the “noise” no distraction as I did other reading. (Same volume settings as early in this thread). What RX came in was easy listening.

Size alone makes new locations feasible. You could cut & hinge a section of tile next to the toilet roll dispenser and wifey would never know.

Sure won’t need all that audio equipment to get booming AM, huh?

When I said the three (3) filters applied to to the coax meant less adjustments from the start, I’m including NOT backing down RF Gain where otherwise local area conditions aren’t bad.

No, this is not the quiet of my 99v2 Galaxy. But it’s much better than the Uniden 980 I’ve had in here as problem-solving was underway.
