Hi folks, First timer here and wasn't sure where to turn. I have a Uniden Grant XL in my possession that was modified in several ways, and I am trying to restore it to factory default. I have the copy of the SAMS for it, but the images in the copied ones leave a lot to be desired, especially if trying to determine the interior wiring layout. So, I was wondering where I might find some high res images of the interior of this radio, both the component and circuit board side? Thank you in advance, Jason

That's a darn shame! I have a Uniden GRANT XL which I purchased new in 2002 and I'm still using it as a base radio. 3.5 watts and no modifications at all and it has never let me down. Last year, I sent it to a forum member just to have him give it a "once-over" check and tweak and it did not require any work at all. Send me a PM and I will provide you with the name of the forum member.

Thanks. Not interested in sending it off anywhere as it's working just fine, but just want to restore to factory specs i.e. the need for the photos.

I was not suggesting you send it off to anyone, buy maybe this person can provide you with what you need or steer you in the right direction. Hang in there, I'm sure someone on this forum will come to your rescue, because they always do.

Thanks so much! This is a great start and may be all that I need. Not sure yet, but my circuit board side definitely had some components added. It's still a bit tough to determine where some of the clipped wires originate, so I may actually snap a couple of photos and try to narrow it down.

Ok, here are some images of mine with question imprinted on the images. Any thoughts on this welcome. Thanks in advance, once again.

That transistor looks like it's attached to TR26. It might be that it was removed that they felt that this was an easier way to replace/reattach it. My guess would be that you won't find one on the top of the board.

Thanks again. Well, the more I look at this radio, the more I am inclined to keep it. I was going to UNmodify it back to stock and then sell it, but the more I'm reading about it, I may just leave everything as-is. I mostly use it with a receive converter to listen to the shortwave bands and it has always done that very well because the noise blanker is far and above even most ham radios.

The idea was to sell this unit and keep the Superstar 3900 and use it with the receive converter. Would be a lot less switching to get all the shortwave bands I like. However, brief testing is showing some drifting with the 3900. It has a FC347 frequency counter that plugs into it, but I find it drifting at least 1/2 Kc after 30 min turned on. The 3900 is the Malaysian unit too. I thought those weren't supposed to drift. This won't do well with the converter since some of the shortwave stations are SSB and drifting won't be good for those. The Grant doesn't drift.

Speaking of the 347 counter, I think I know how to hook this up to the Grant, but is there some sort of adapter I need? With the 3900, it just plugs in the back, but the Grant is going to need something else. Any thoughts there welcome.

Welcome! Just curious, what shortwave converter are you using?

Ten Tec used to sell a kit that simply remixed IF to convert the RF amp / 1st Mixer stage - the kit had the RF amp and the micro-controller to help re-mix the new set of frequencies to meet the input of the radio you're using to convert - to receive the other bands (Tentech also made a TX / RX kit for this in ham bands) - works in a way like SDR - in principal - the SDR's Software does the "calculations" to make the new IF work in the SDR's converter. you're doing the same only letting the converter use your radio to do it.

Funny you should mention SDR. I have been in the process of trying to get my old Softrock going today. Still working out a few kinks, but should be good to go very soon.
