Galaxy DX55f, squeal

I recently installed the above radio in my Freightliner and am having an issue. RK56 noise cancelling mic and external Cobra brand speaker. The radio mounts in an overhead console so the radio speaker is covered, therefore the need for the external speaker. I never use talkback. At any mic gain setting over about half the radio squeals on transmit. No difference in speaker location, even moved it to the passenger side to get it as far from the microphone as possible, no change. I just disconnected the external speaker and no squeal at any mic gain setting. Is it possible to get RF into the speaker and "back feed" the radio causing the overload? If so, what is the fix? Suggestions welcome.

Sounds like you bought a cheap speaker. Is it a squeal or a squall ? If squall then there is a grounding issue. Squeal is feedback from a low ohm speaker or a bad speaker.

So by description, the squeal is only when the external speaker is connected...

I hope I have that right...

The easiest fix is to not use the External Speaker - but if you're using a "cubby" type of mounting location, the internal speaker, being covered up, is pretty much useless.

It may not be "RF" that is getting back in...it just could be a misplaced header. That's an assembly issue....

To know that - requires knowing more info - like;
  • are you using a EPTDX2912 xx type of board?
  • is this a surface SMD type of board now?
    • You may need to locate the INTERNAL speakers header - the one that connects the bottom panel speaker - it's to the rear by that power and EXT/PA speaker jacks.
    • When they put this together, the internal speaker is hooked up then the put the panels together and throw it in the box
    • - if the shop/Store had to do any work, like Frequency Expansion mods
      • - put in an echo or perform any work,
    • they may not have seated the speaker and the header correctly - the wiring can "pinch" between the panel and the case, forcing a short condition
      • - if the correct wire is pinched, it can form the loop and talkback issue you hear.
To answer all this, requires you to open it up, and you might be breaking any seals - Seals that, which if the shop you bought it from sealed it, well ... you lost their ability to fix it on their end.

If that header is not set right, or if there's physical damage back there, this area would "lose" proper ground connection.

It also could depend on the external speaker - and if it uses external power or even has an adjustable volume pot

Let us know how you want to approach this...

Andy, you are the man. I removed the radio and inspected the back, guess what? The internal speaker wiring was pinched between the case. Pulled the "VOID" sticker off, opened it up and found damaged insulation. Soldered a couple replacement wires and all seems good from talking to the locals. I think I will leave the speaker on the passenger side at least for now, I think I like it better there anyway.

Didn't worry about the warranty (or lack thereof) with the sticker gone, I figure if they couldn't put the thing together right I'm not going to send it back there anyway.
Thanks again.

I wouldn't worry too much about that sticker because Galaxy doesn't use those anyway. Looks like the shop that sold it to you was in there and they put that sticker on. Galaxy has been great with warranty work, that's if you sent it to them instead of the seller.
