Starduster - Watt rating?

I also consider the Starduster a modified vertical 1/2 wave dipole of sorts. But, other than maybe a little difference in feed point impedance and the appearance, how is it different from the traditional L-shaped 1/4-wave ground plane? What does the dipole do that the ground plane won't, or visa-versa?

Does anyone other than JoGunn still make a CB base, 1/4-wave ground plane?

:D 1/4 wave or 1/2 wave it still has stood the test of time and faired damn well. i wish i could find an original that isn't gold plated as the price will reflect. all i know is they work and they work damn good for what it is. 73 :D

'Doc, which one is which? I was figuring a vertical dipole, our claim to the Starduster, and a 1/4 wave ground plane with a 1/4 wave radiator and a horizontal ground plane attached consisting of one, two, or three 1/4 radials. There is no polarity difference unless you consider all dipoles to be horizontal radiators.

Marconi,
Sorry, 'dipole' always means horizontal to me unless stated otherwise, just what I've gotten used to. If it's vertical then there's no difference in polarity.

I know this is old, and I hope you're still with us. The quarter wave ground plane will have better ground efficiency for one.

I do not know about Ground efficiency on a ground plane if you install it a wave length AGL the type ground really has no bearing on a vertical 1/4 wl gp. I have around a dozen homebrew 1/4wl direct fed GP installed around North Florida and they seem to work as good as any other GP around regardless of size 1/2 wl or 5/8 wl or .64 wl
they just plain work and easy to build.

I've got one of those old Workman 6 hubs. I stuck an old Radio Shack 102" fiberglass whip wrapped in wire loom for protection from the elements as my vertical radiator. Three Radio Shack 102" stainless steel whips make up the downward sloping elements.

No coils, no tuning networks, no resistors...no headaches. I just need to get it a lot higher, but that is not real practical here in prime hurricane territory.
