Morning guys , which would yield me the best results? 4 pill 455s or 2 pill 2879 red dots . Radio comp cobra 29 . Thanks

It really depends on a few things, from my blowing stuff up and such, to where I am now (still blowing stuff up just not as often), this is my "thoughts".

Running a stock radio, the 4X455s would produce more watts without straining the components. A "comp tuned radio" means many different things and has as many variations in power output. So depending on the PEP of your radio, it may be too much for the 455s.

The 2X2879s (one of my favorites) will not produce as many watts with a stock radio but a hot radio will bring it alive but would still be running close to the 4X455s in output. Now, if you stick a driver in front of the 2 pill or run a hot dual final radio, you'll see some great number and I do mean great. BUT, too much drive and you'll be sounding like crap, running into compression and splattering 48 channels on 4 bands in 2 countries....

So in my humble opinion, out of your two choices, I'd go with the 4X455s. If you have a really hot radio or a driver, I'd go with the 2X2879s.

My comp 29 would drive the snot out of the 2879 ? 2 pill?

How many watts are you getting out of it? To "drive the snot out of it" you'd need 80+ watts of drive, she can take more but you'd be summonsing the smoke gods to be released. 60-80 watts drive is a nice smooth level for a 2X2879. Good watts without "really" stressing the components. 20-40 watts drive will run it but not close to its potential... the box will probably last forever at that drive though.

I thought a four pill 2879 would need 80 plus watts pep?

I guess that depends on what you consider the "best results are". There is more to sounding good then a number on a watt meter. If your Cobra 29 is all hot rodded out and swinging more then 45 watts then I would say NONE of those amplifiers will work well for very long.

Really? I run a Dustin comp 29 and a 2 pill 1446 for years alway get great compliments. Actually please it’s to Loud.

Think of a 2X4, 2 2879s driving 4 2879s.... or driving a 4 pill with a separate 2 pill box.
I used to run a 1 pill driving a 2 pill driving a 4 pill, 3 boxes all Toshiba 2879s.
It also depends on how the box is designed. Used to, when Toshibas were cheap and we didn't give a second thought to price or being on frequency, we'd use a 2 pill box to drive a 4 pill at 18VDC or a 4 pill to drive an 8 pill and so on.
Now if you're running a TX Star 500V, then 80 PEP is pushing it because of the way it's set up. Whereas a "Comp box" "home brew" or whatever they like to call them can take a 2 pill driver.
It really boils down to what kind of box it is, what kind of transistors it has and the voltage you're running....plus SWR below 1.3 when running it kinda hard.

I would run a 4 pill 2879 box with it. That would leave plenty of headroom, which is needed to ensure that it is not the limiting factor when trying to sound good. This would also allow you to run a higher dead key than a 2 pill if you wanted to.

And that radio is way too hot for two 1446 finals. Your driving the holy hell out of that amp. Just saying, run it how you want though it's your geer.

If I had to run a 2 pill with that radio an old school Davemade or X-Force two 2879's class C that's fan cooled @14 volts with the dead key at say 3 watts. Even then you will be working that amp hard.

Thank you buddy.
