In early 1980s Muppet Labs hypothesized that dramatically increased echo delay is used to compensate for the lack of a side mic. Below is the last know formula being used in the experiments.

The constant being used is Side Mic= 1

Variable 1 is the Echo Delay Level on the dial

Variable 2 in the length of CB Radio Antenna

Average Length of Microphone Cord = 4.09 meters

Speed of Sound = 343 meters/second

The Side Mic Echo Compensation Theory is as follows:

Side Mic = ( 4.09 / 343 x Echo Delay Level) / (Length of CB Radio Antenna x 3.14 )

It was a work in progress in the 1980s. As it is obvious to see the longest echo delay and the tallest CB Radio Antenna will never equal to having a side mic.

(A post as good as it gets)

The main theme of this thread is pretty common. IMHA, I really don’t think it’s anti-echo. It’s anti bad radio. Let’s take the Wayback Machine to the days of silk shirts, mullets, and Saturday morning cartoons- I like KISS, but listening to KISS, the rock band, with the needle buried all the way to the right is just not fun. All the tones of the music just blend together and Detroit Rock City is no longer enjoyable. Trying to have a purposeful conversation with someone who is talking on an “electric twang box,” lol, can be a bummer. The last radio I had with echo was an experiment with a Uniden 510, internal speaker removed in favor of a Turbo Echo 2 adjustments on the board. It was set up and left be. My father ran it for over 12 years with a stock Superstar mic. I was set with just enough reverb to make give it a deeper sound he thought it sounded like talking with a much bigger radio. Time with our radio hobby should be enjoyable. I’m going to hide in the closet and listen to Destroy on vinyl now.

Disagree. Slight amount adds vibrancy. Restores lifelike tone.

Absolutely correct, Slowmover.

With all due respect to the naysayers and broadcast engineers, a PROPERLY ADJUSTED echo added to the audio signal can provide up to a 3db increase in audio intelligibility and perceived loudness at the receive end. This is because the listener, in effect, hears everything twice.
