larsen mobile antennas for cb

Just keep in mind they are not rated for higher wattage. Most are 200W I believe. Great for use with a stock CB or dual final export but not with an amp.

Several nice amp choices come in between the dual final 40-50W and the 150-200W antenna ratings. KL-203 & KL-7405; to start. I’d bet some experience with those units plus these antennas might be found in a search.

I ran a Larsen NMO27B on an NMO trunk lip mount on my wife’s 2003 Monte Carlo SS for a number of years back in the early/mid 2000s. Had a Uniden Grant LT radio mounted in her vehicle, and it worked well.
Our farthest contact from the base to her car was around 30 miles.

She even used the radio when she would travel, and answer truck drivers who called out to her, as her car was pretty sporty looking, and who can resist a blond in a bright red coupe ??? So it was a successful install and the antenna did quite a good job, and looked good on her car.

I had run that same antenna on my ‘96 Impala SS before I put it on her car, since I wanted a stealthy looking antenna on the Impala. My experience was good too, running an old Magnum 357 (100 watt) radio. I was able to work skip and ground wave quite well, so it is a good antenna.

The only thing I'll add is the loading coil does not have a tap to ground. Having a tap to ground makes it easier to obtain a flatter VSWR over a wide range of ground plane surfaces, particularly those that are lacking.

Can't speak to the Larsen 11m antennas, but the 2m Larsen NMO 2/70B I mounted on the roof of my truck is an excellent performer. In optimal locations, I've hit 2m repeaters at 60-80 miles out with 50 watts FM. VSWR 1.2:1 @ 146 MHz, 1.4:1 at band the edges.

I hope the quality extends to their other products.

image.png image.jpeg I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) that what 828 and Slomover are referring to is a LARSEN NMO30 coil and a 64" whip that will tune to 11m or you can use the NMO34 coil and 64" whip for 10m. I will try to include a picture. You can only use 150-200watts max but like Slomover said there are options for that range of power.
I have used Larsen antennas with commercial VHF radios and they are built very well (a lot of truckers use them in western Canada because they use commercial VHF radios such as Icom 5061's Kenwood 7180's and such). Years ago I cut one up to see how they were made (I'll try and upload a picture: NMO 150 but they are built the same and still made in the U.S.A.).

Ditto what Hilltop said, same exact results.

I currently own the laird cb27 and it works ok. Worked great on the previous vehicles but not so much on the current one. I've been eyeing that combo above for some time now but just haven't got around to it. If I remember correctly, @Mudfoot had suggested something like this before.

Rebel Outlaw, thanks for bumping this thread. Maybe we can do some more in terms of trying this and reporting back.

Absolutely Eldorado828, I have been looking at that combination for some time as well and that's why I brought it up.
I even phoned professional radio in Ontario but the best place to get it looks like it's the Antenna Farm. The guys in Ontario ran into the same problem I did (I am also in Canada) which is you have to order 20 coils and 20 whips.
When you order you have to order coil NMO30BCO and whip W640. There is no limit when ordering from the Antenna Farm!
It would be a very clean looking and reliable install providing years of service.
Regarding the LAIRD did you check if water got in there?
I have used a COMPROD antenna (made in Quebec, Canada) and they work good but it is also a 3 piece design just like Laird and PCtel and sometimes you can get water in there. Also make sure that the pin is not stuck upward. Now I favour the Larsen design for that reason (also why I cut one to see how they are made).
