President Lincoln II+ V3 AM Choppy Squelch Issue

Ha, indeed. "...strongly advise against messing around..." Got the AM squelch back to factory but it wasn't easy. SSB is improved with the adjustments. Still a great radio no doubt.

Any luck finding any more info one what those AM/FM squelch settings should be. Could be unique to each radio I guess. I'm baffled by what S0FA1² means. Looks like several ASC tweeks there too. Who really makes these radios? The company itself is now strictly import/export from what I can tell.

S9FA1² = 948
S9FA0'1 = 039
S9FA0'3 = 204
S9FA0'5 = 724
S9FA0'7 = 858
S9FA0'9 = 885

The solution for the AM/FM squelch settings is to send it in to President to be recalibrated. Mine came back a little better than stock, but the squelch is still touchy. Just the way these radios are designed I guess. It's more complicated than simply changing the numerical settings and involves test equipment. The SSB squelch is adjustable if you know what you are doing and can inject RF of varying strengths, but it is very tricky and easy to mess up.

Love my Lincoln II+ by the way. It's been in daily mobile use and is the best export radio I've ever owned.

Agreed if one takes that to: Squelch “problem” not a problem given the radios virtues.

I sent mine to President after calling them. Still not a proper AM squelch. Set to lowest setting "1", and all audio is squelched.

Have tried various engineering menu S9FAO settings, and returning them to factory when it was all said and done, having seen no difference at all. Maybe a part got substituted in manufacturing or something. Side band squelch seems fine. Can run squelch on SB up to 3 before the audio stops. AM squelch is very wierd going quiet on lowest setting (1).

Yes, Rest of the radio works good. Still can't find a programming cable.

Could the AM/FM squelch circuit be injected with demodulated audio, or carrier, and not actually noise as has been done since the beginning.

Does anybody notice if squelch works "better" if the volume is turned up real high? Just wondering if the low volume and touchy squelch are related since the audio amp gets a kill signal on it's "neg" terminal to initiate audio squelch.

Maybe it's time to send it down the road and start over with a new one. Nothing worse than getting a new defective radio, especially one that takes more to repair or mod.

Shipped it Florida for warranty service last week. I took a youtube video of exactly what it's doing and sent them the link so there's no confusion this time.
 
Its the ASC feature for AM/FM. Hopefully, if enough people complain about it, President will include the option to enable/disable it in one of the menus in the next firmware version.

At least on the AT-6666, you can set the threshold for it from 1 to 9 but, you still can't disable it.

Looking at the schematic, there's several parts near the output amp, a transistor, caps, resistors, labeled NC. Pin 2 on the amp goes high or low to kill audio output. I wonder if those omitted parts are supposed to smooth that function and got left out for some other reason. Audio needing to be at 50% before it's able to be heard might be part of this perhaps. NC ???

They wrote me and said it meets factory specs on the bench. This is really disappointing. Like to know the real story one day. They named the radio after an icon for honesty and integrity. Not feeling anything like that from these guys yet but I'll wait and see I suppose.

"It's a known tech bug in the radio we have no intention of doing anything about because it would incorporate design changes that would cost us a buttload of money, since if we admit an issue, we'll have to pay for people to send in the radios for repair. Further, since NOT enough folks are complaining and it's only a few persnickety folks in a radio forum who aren't going to spend money with us in the future anyway now, WHY should we care?"


There, that sound about right?
 
They can avoid this kind of attention by fixing my radio. Just put an old fashioned squelch that works on it.

If one could mod the radio with a standard squelch circuit, it would maybe fix the volume issue too. The Lincoln squelch uses an analog to digital conversion of the output of the 2nd IF signal to compare with software and send a low kill signal to the audio op amp negative input. I simple squelch tapped off the audio amp would do it. (I understand these things but don't even own an o-scope any more.)
