Thank you NT. Is there / are instructions under the images of the RJ-12 plugs showing wiring of the plugs. Are they wire for wire or are they swapped ?

Do not make that assumption! One of those lines has 8 volts on it. Buy the cable or do the research on the pin outs required or you’ll smoke your radio’s.

I( asked Yaesu for advice. The drawing is confusing in that it shows pins 4 & 6 above/below one another, poorly drawn as you cannon follow them through from one radio to another. No written instructions can be found on the WWW on how to make the cable.
It appears than only pins 4 & 6 are needed for the Cloning but that is just a guess.
I'll wait to hear back from Yaesu for instructions on how to make the cable.

To make your own cable, only Pins 6 and 4 are utilized. Pin 6 is the PTT/Clone line and Pin 4 which is ground. This cloning cable works in the same way that the majority of HT’s do in that they use a 1/4 jack with only two lines being utilized. It’s apparent from from the diagram that Pin 6 is the one on the far left as you face the radio and Pin 4 is the fourth one in starting at the right and counting 4 over.

The confusion in the diagram for the FT2980r is trying to decipher whether or not Pin 6 (Clone) line goes to Pin 4 (GND). They DO NOT. Pin 6 (Clone) goes to Pin 6 (Clone) and Pin 4 (GND) goes to Pin 4 (GND). It would not make any sense to send Pin 6 essential the data line to Ground essentially shorting out the transfer of data.

This pictures from the cloning cable on a Yaesu FT2900 shows it more clearly as do these instructions:

Making your cable

I used some cat-5 computer network cable that I had. I cut a short piece off about 15 inches. I then trimmed the shielding off. You only need on twisted pair, you can cut the others off. Straighten the 2 wires out, I used the solid color for Pin 6 and the stripped for Pin 4. Be sure to its the same for both connectors, 6 is solid and 4 is striped.
